I've tried calling them and left quite a few messages. I was looking for a price on a drop camp. No big deal. If they cant return a phone call, they dont deserve my business. Besides, i love packing in on foot anyway

Used them this year, had no issues what so ever and would use them again. The communication issues may stem from their location of service, good chunk of that country they work in is satellite or inreach based communication only

They are/were pretty busy being the only reputable outfitters in the Conejos canyon. You are probably right with your way of thinking in that they do not need "your" business. Best for you to look elsewhere or good luck with your footwork.
On another note, CCO is a great business and they are plenty busy during hunting seasons. I have personally used them during the summer on overnight trips. If I ever did a guided or drop camp/packout in 81, I would not hesitate to use them. But if you want responses right that minute, try being a little realistic....especially during sept through dec 1.

So calling them in Feb, March, April time frame making the inquiry for several years is considered last minute or unrealistic? You can do better than that.

I think that realisticly and truthfully, is you hate it when i say anything negative about hunting 80 81. You hate it when i mention the heavy otc pressure, you hate it when i mention the poor quality of hunting for elk it has become here because of the over crowding, and now you hate it because i dare mention CCO in a light you don't agree with. Maybe because your family used to outfit here and you have connections with them? Perhaps your experiences have been different with them? But To suggest i am being unrealistic or trying to do things last minute is nonsense.

Let me ask you a question. Did your dad and grandfather ignore calls or not answer folks who were genuinely interested in using there services when they were outfitting this area?

Lets not forget something. Im not just another fly by night hunter in 80 81. Ive been hunting here since '09 and ive talked to many local people here over the years that have basically helped form some of my, in your eyes, unpopular opinions, based on my experiences and conversations with locals from Fox Creek, Platoro, Monte Vista, Alamosa, Antonito, Jasper, Manassa, La Jara and surrounding communities, and a handful of guys on my jobsite who i have spoke to in depth with. I've hunted 80 81 from the NM border to the northern most boundry and hiked into the seemingly more and more crowded backcountry of the San Juan Wilderness. Alot of local hunters here share many of the same sentiments and concerns i have mentioned about 80 81 over the years. I assure you my opinions are not blind statements.

And if CCO or any outfitter is to good to return a simple phone call, **** em because i don't need their services. If thats how they operate, its their business......

I havent hunted with them personally, and have never called them to request anything at all, but ive run across them and talked to them on numerous occasions, seem like good guys and ive seen them out working sun, rain, or snow.

No idea on the success rates of their hunts, ive seen many many come out of 81 empty handed, guided and not guided, and ran across many hunters who hunt there year after year and have no elk to show for it (dedication i suppose). As mentioned above, 81 see's a ton of pressure, and is recently the talk of discussions of moving to a point unit away from OTC i believe? i imagine it will move towards a draw unit in the near future, we will see, and it wont be because its a quality unit *haha*

To be fair to CCO, most outfitters don't call potential customers back in a realistic time frame. I did speak with Bart a couple of years ago about a potential hunt and he was great to talk to. Ended up hunting somewhere else but I have not heard anything bad about him.

He is a great dude. Proud to call him a friend. He knows that area like the back of his hand. They are very busy almost daily doing trail rides and fishing trips during the spring and summer. Leave a message or email them. They leave out from their ranch to the trailhead early in the mornings around 6 AM. By the time they finish their rides, load the horses, get back to the ranch, unload the horses, and feed them, they are usually not inside until after midnight. They will usually get back with you on a day off. I have hunted with thwm the last 2 years and ibam going back again this year. Feel free to message me anytime to talk about them or the area.

We leave tomorrow evening for this hunt. Riding in Thursday. Figured we'd stay in Mogote for a night to shorten the Thursday drive. Can't wait to spend 8 days in the back country with my wife. Getting some meat and her first bull will be a huge bonus. The hard part is not packing too much crap. Almost easier packing for backpack hunts knowing we have to carry everything. Horses makes enticing to start packing extra weight we probably don't need.

That is a great outfit. We did a drop camp with them in 2020. Bart worked hard to take care of all his clients. I would definitely go back, and probably will in the near future.

Good luck on your hunt. Let us know how if goes.
