Compound vs crossbow

That does not mean that 68 percent less deer would be killed if they did not allow crossbows. Plenty of traditional bow shooters have added a crossbow to their arsenal.

Nothing sickens me more than crossbows in archery season.

Most crossbow users describe themselves as archery or bow hunters. Secretly, most crossbow hunters are simply ashamed that they use one.

Just saying.

Thank you for posting those links. Kind of surprised by those numbers. Lots of very good info in the details. Looks like a debate with many angles.

I think at this point the antis just need to sit back and watch bow hunters cannibalize ourselves. Why do they need to fight us when we gladly fight each other. Elitism!!! Such a joke at this point.

I don't know who started saying the "eat ourselves" thing...

It's not elitist to observe that crossbows are a shoulder fired weapon, not archery.

Sincerely,

A Shitty Bowhunter

I'm a proud member of the crossbow fraternity and don't understand why fellow hunters shit on a viable tool that's legal to use. If you prefer to use a compound/recurve/longbow/atlatl, have at it. No judgement from me.

We have a ton of factions in the hunting world. Instead of friendly fire, think of the big picture. It's hunters versus non-hunters.

Crossbow naysayers would be wise to heed the advice of Red Green. At the end of each show, he'd say, "Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together."

I personally don't feel adversarial about it. If I met a guy with a crossbow, I'm not going to feel any differently about him than anyone else. But if I could make the rules, I'm saying no crossbows in archery season. Maybe with some sort of disability...

I see it similarly to using a centerfire rifle during muzzleloader seasons. Maybe it's got open sights and is a single-shot, it's still not the same thing.

Back to if I was making the rules... I would like to see more "short range" seasons. Let people use muzzleloaders, crossbows, shotgun slugs... etc.

I'm just tuning in to hear the guys that hunt with the latest compounds try to justify why they are more pure than someone that shoots a crossbow.

If you aren't shooting a self made long bow with wood arrows and stone points, sit down bro.

I don't care what people use personally, but the whole compound purism craze is actually very similar to a few decades ago when the trad guys were disgusted with the compound bows. Times change boys....

Crossbows aren't archery that's why. Sure they shoot a broadhead and that's where the similarities end.

If you are against technology in archery seasons, just ban release aids, sights and any sort of weight let off.

It’s not about the amount of “technology “. It’s about the fundamental nature of a crossbow. No matter how advanced a compound bow is, you can’t lock it out at full draw (illegal in archery season ) and mount it on a tripod,
like you can a crossbow. Anyone who’s archery hunted knows that often, the most difficult part of sealing the deal is getting drawn when the animal is mere yards from your location. The people defending crossbows in archery season are mostly rifle hunters and crossbow enthusiasts.

It’s got nothing to do with purity, trad guys usually wear strange hats and crossbow guys wear rainbow camo.
Neither group is a cool as me and my compound shooting buddies. Bro.

Ok ok I'll quit trolling. It's just so easy with the compound crowd. Now if someone would start an Android vs iPhone....
Yes, it’s sooooo easy. One of my favorite things in hunting camp is messing with compound purists who defend their decades-old technology like it predates Stonehenge. The irrationality of their hysteria never gets old.

The best part is a good number of compounders, once archery season ends, pull out a rifle with a carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel and a 4-24X dialing scope and will defend shooting at big game out to ridiculous distance.

To paraphrase Doc Holliday in the 1993 Western movie Tombstone, "It appears their hypocrisy knows no bounds.”

I have used both. They are not the same not even close. I have run a bow for well over 30 years and dropped many a bull with it. The draw of the bow is where you get busted. You do not have that with the crossbow. The draw is a lot of movement that must be timed right. Also current crossbows are insane. My Ravin will hold a softball sized group at 100 yards. They are not a rifle but they are pretty close to a muzzle loader.

Good for you for migrating to a more effective tool. As a hunter, you chose accuracy and a quick death over compound bravado. Who wants to get busted pulling over stupid cams in the heat of the moment? Not many can admit to that. I applaud you.
