As a resident of MT, I’m very glad crossbows aren’t allowed in archery season. I agree with the sentiment that they should be called a crossgun. To me it’s a short range gun..
I think they have their place and am certainly not against them for disabled or seniors.
To me there is a difference I see in people I meet or observe in archery season vs general rifle. And I mean this in the nicest of ways lol, but the amount of ‘sleazy’ (for lack of a better word) hunters I see goes up in general rifle.
Don’t get me wrong there are lots of serious, dedicated guys out there in gen season, but there is definitely a higher percentage of ‘losers’ out there than there is in archery season.
IMO this has a lot to do with how much time/ dedication it takes to be proficient with your weapon. I could go on and on about this, but my point is this: Why would we want more lazy, rude, yet able-bodied people out there in archery season?? To me that’s exactly the type of person who is attracted to a crossbow!
And yes I totally get that not EVERYONE who shoots a crossbow is like this, same as not everyone who shoots a rifle is like this either..
Full disclaimer- I consider myself a bow hunter at heart and shoot a compound. I understand that a lot of what I said could be said by trad shooters about the ‘compound guys’.. But I think it’s still hard to argue that it takes much more time to be good at shooting a compound than it does a crossbow. I haven’t shot a trad bow a whole lot, but I have zero doubt in my mind that if compounds became illegal to use in archery season I would learn to shoot one!
Flame away!
