I’m looking at unit 74 for an elk archery hunt this year. I hunted 74 a few years ago during 3rd rifle season so I’m familiar with the terrain but I don’t know what to expect for pressure during archery season. I’ll be taking horses in and plan on setting up a backcountry camp so will hopefully be able to get past the majority of the crowds. Does anyone know if there are a lot of outfitters with backcountry setups during archery season?

@nkink typically we don't allow unit specific threads in the open forum as it spot burns for all future users. you can check out some guidelines here- https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/rokslide-forum-rules-etiquette.277022/

I'll let this roll for awhile about the outfitter information. You can check with the forest service to see who is licensed in the area you want to go.

Probably not the case that 74 has a higher than average amount of outfitters per square mile, but, yes, there are a "lot" of outfitters. Expect to see a lot of other horseback hunters, too.

I’m not sure there really is a true backcountry area in 74 with all of the roads. You have hermosa wilderness, but you can ride a dirtbike through the middle.

yep and you will find a certain class of individuals riding dirt bikes right through all the Wilderness areas too ...

Common occurrence in Colorado. Appears if you have Colorado Tags on your trail bike it's okay and rules do not apply to you and you can ride right through the designated "Wilderness Areas" whenever you want.

The dirt bike trail is in the Hermosa Creek "Special Management Area". It's separate from the Wilderness Area....

Search on Google Earth. I bet I have found at least 25 backcountry wall tents while scouting hunting units. Look for horse tracks/game trails and follow the paths to the wall tents. Its nice to know where the outfitters are when hunting a new unit.

I’ve had this happen multiple times in a wilderness area a bit east of there. Pretty frustrating when you finally glass up a legal bull and they push them two counties over

I’ve never gotten through a Colorado hunt without seeing at least two dirt bikes or sxs driving up and down “No MV” trails blasting Mumford & sons on the JBL as loud as it’ll go.

Reporting it is a waste of time. I still do it, but it doesn’t help. But god forbid my OHV sticker falls off because their environmentally friendly sticker adhesive doesn’t actually stick to glass.

A couple years ago I had a thru hiker singing at the top of his lungs while his dog ran all over the place on the rim of the basin I was stalking a bedded deer.. was inside of 60 waiting for a clean shot. Hopped up startled from that and slipped down into the timber. He was an awesome deer too. That back left fork had 4 points

Explains why my thread disappeared even though most conversation resulted in DM’s as asked.
