anyone have insight as to how good a unit this would be for a late season (fist 2 weeks of Dec) cow tag? Are the animals still generally on public land?

They should still be on public whether it is down low on BLM or on top if the winter is like the one we’ve just had.

Congrats FireWillie! My daughter just drew 1st rifle in there this year. I have never hunted the unit but will make a few trips over this summer to see if I can figure out some spots to take her. She is pretty stoked about it. Sounds like it holds a lot of good bulls.

Hit me up after archery and I’ll share what I learned from archery. Love to see her take a great bull

My brother drew an archery tag for 61 this year as a NR, with 22 points I believe. We have hunted numerous Colorado units but never this one. We will likely be using a horse and mules to assist on this hunt, so that means packing in to set up camp hopefully near elk and away from people. I’m just diving into my research and am reaching out for any info someone may be willing to share. I know the names of a few “elk hangouts” and to get a mile or two off the road dividing 61-62. I’d specifically like to know about access with the horse trailer, it’s 18’. Places that would accommodate and roads that you can’t get a trailer down. Also locations of any known outfitters to avoid. I figure after 22 years wait avoiding people shouldn’t be too difficult.?? Thanks for any help, this should be a pleasant change from the usual OTC hunt we are used to. PMs welcome

I wlll be in there as well. Only thing I can say, is you will have no issues with that trailer on Divide Road. Huge pullouts, turn arounds, camp spots etc. There are couple main roads that drop off of Divide that are real good, county roads. Those too, no issue. Any of the standard FS roads, forget it.
