Good Evening. I drew a Colorado unit 44 3rd season rifle this year. Never scouted the unit and I need to start making a game plan for November. Any advice/help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I see you just joined us and your first question is about a area to hunt. It happens every year after the tags come out. You are in some what of a tough situation. No one really knows you and you have not yet contributed anything to this forum. At least you could introduce yourself and tell a little about your hunting goals/expectations. I know you have waited a long time to get this tag. Congrats on getting it. Have you ever been in the unit and do you have maps?

Yes @bigmoose, I have been applying for many years I am a 32 year old from the front range of Colorado. I have spent the last few years backcountry archery hunting in the Zirkel Wilderness, so I am not afraid to work hard for an animal. I do not have unit maps yet but will be stopping by the USGS and FS to gather some up have a few work trips planned in Grand Junction this summer, and will be meeting the local Parks and Wildlife officer as well as checking out the terrain. I have a friend who is slightly familiar with the area, but only said that I need to be praying for some snow.

A couple good maps to have would be: Eagle/Avon #121 and Holy Cross/Ruedi Reservoir #126. These pretty much cover the unit. They are the Trails Illustrated maps from National Geographic. You can get them at: Buy BLM and Forest Service Maps at the PLIC Map Center or Amazon.

I would scout early and learn the roads. Snow will be a big help and if you do get snow or rain, be sure to have chains for all four tires. The roads can get nasty.

Good news: Looks like you live in CO!!! Get out and scout my friend!

Yup, looks like you've got no excuse to go scout. Tough unit with plenty of bounty hunters. Good luck out there.
