I have a extremely high probability of drawing a mule deer tag, in the same unit I also have a high chance of a elk tag. Both archery. It's a lot of dark timber with some open meadows. What's the best way to approach hunting them in the dark timber? Ive whitetail deer hunted in the national forests in northern MN, but the times i've elk hunted they seem completely different. I'm not looking for a monster buck, just something to fill the freezer while elk hunting.

Move slowly! I find myself walking into mule deer in thick timber quite often, but only when moving slowly and quietly into the wind. Rain seems to make it easier to get close. It also seems to help to not have a deer tag and just have an elk tag.

Ya I had gotten close to quite a few deer when I was out there last year. Its going to be just my luck to not get close when I actually have a tag;)
