Colorado 80/81 Elk

The one year i hunted elk in these units was about 5-6 years ago. For some reason F&G were flying helicopters in and netting sheep goats and maybe even some elk. All the locals said it had the elk messed up that year. I saw tons of rubs, fresh shit, tracks and other sign but never laid eyes on an elk. Just curious if there are any decent bulls in these units. Im headed back this year with a deer and elk tag.

I hunted 2nd Rifle last year in 78/81 (Archuleta/Conejos County). Saw several bulls (shot one), and probably 25 cows in the first 2 days I hunted (killed second day in the evening). Heard quite a few bugles also. Most activity was at 9500 feet and higher, however. Foggy and rain first morning. Clear and cool second day.

No elk bro, crappy fishing too! Ha ha ha I will be up there first and last week this year. Will be scouting this weekend and a couple more times before season. Only 9 hours from the house in Angelo.

It's a fine unit, you just have to find them. I hunt there, and it hasn't come together yet but I've seen some great animals.

Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious, but how do you know what you've drawn? (You could be referring to OTC elk of course, but the deer tag piqued my interest). I even checked the backdoor today haha (no results up yet).

I assumed he was OTC. I hunt on a private ranch, second rifle OTC in 78/81. I stay in Chama, and head North for the hunt every day, hunting the Southern part of 78/81. Not sure if I can be much help to him, I think he would be coming down from the North side of 80/81, maybe from the Monte Vista area?

I put in for deer with 3 points and last year it only took 1 to draw. My backdoor showed up this week too.

Nice. Yeah when I asked I hadn't heard rumblings of the backdoor yet...so I got pretty curious about my own tag . Didn't work out this year though.
