Hunted Montana the last 3 years tagging out each year. The drive is a bear coming from Louisiana. We decided to give Colorado a try this year. We have 0 pp. Just looking to tag out. Found out today, we applied for unit 5 with huntin fools help. Hope we draw. We just love the hunt. Anyone have any real life recent experience in unit 5? Not looking for specifics.

I don’t want to bust your bubble but barring something crazy in the draw you have no chance at drawing that tag. I’m really not sure why huntin fool would have applied you for this hunt with no preference points. That hunt will probably take 6 points to draw.

Saw it was about 30% chance. We told them best odds. 3 of us in the group. If 1 draws we all do. Fingers crossed.

yeah not a single non resident drew that tag with under 5 points last year, I would be pretty unhappy with Huntin Fool if I were you. Second rifle only has a ~11% chance of drawing with 0 points.

This is the second time this year I've seen people get burned from that website, I wouldn't trust anybody but the CPW draw stats

Just spoke to hf. They mistyped 5...it’s 50. So that looks like 21% with 1 pt.

Again I’m just looking for the experience in a new state but it seems impossible to draw a tag in Colorado. Montana was a no brained 3 years in a row. Used hf every year.

Just get a point or 2 and come to Wyoming on a general tag. Pretty easy to figure out your draw odds on your own with the info on the WG&F website.

Coming from Louisiana. Driving that far has been wearing.

I sincerely hope you draw and have a great hunt. I can understand the long drive being tough. I’d still be pretty aggravated if I paid HF a yearly subscription and they applied me for hunt that I have no chance of drawing (21% at 1 point means no tags for 0 points). There are several hunts for second season and maybe a few third season hunts you at least had a shot at drawing.

I’m pretty ticked off right now. So far this has been really crappy. Prior to this, I had no complaints with hf. It gets worse. I have it all in email though. Quick question to make sure I’m not missing something...do otc mule deer tags exist?

No, there are no OTC deer tags in Colorado. Your best option to hunt deer in Colorado this year would be getting one off the returned tag list in August or purchasing a landowner voucher. If you wanted to make sure you hunted mule deer this fall study up on Wyoming general tags that you can draw with no points and apply by May 31.

Only reason we changed it up was bc of the drive. We’ve been successful in Montana for 3 years now. But the 36 hour drive is too much. We have to miss 4 extra days of work just for traveling which is hard bc we all work in a hospital.

Not sure which part You are in but you could probably be to Casper in 24hrs. Long damn ways for sure but better than 36. Looks to me like HF May have screwed you on drawing a Colorado tag. If it were just you I think you could pick a tag up on the list in August but trying to grab 4 could be problematic.

New Orleans.

If I don’t draw, I’ll try to get my money back bc I was not advised this year. A lot of balls were dropped.

There is very little public land a guy might want to hunt in unit 50. You might find some pronghorn, or a section of public with a truck in each corner and on each side, with a herd of migrating elk packed in a merry go round ball in the middle....

This is not accurate, there are several rifle tags that you can draw in Colorado every year for deer and even some second choice options where you get to hunt and build a point.

I was going to say, I was planning muleys this year but changed my mind but still had a pretty good sized list of units you can draw w/ 0 points for 2nd season.. Some with good success rates. Sounds like some miscommunication with HF?

Yes. If I don’t draw, I will post all the misinformation.

Question: if I don’t draw, will I have 1 pp for next year automatically? And if I don’t draw, will I have to buy another small game license and other fee to buy an otc license?

I’m aggravated with the process already this year. I should have went otc from the get go and gone after elk. It’s been too easy the last 3 years using hf and going to Montana. I’ve been spoiled by the process. This year, not so much.
