My buddy and I got drawn for 1st Rifle for units 31 and the others. We will be looking to backpack in and stay up there until we both kill a bull or the season ends.

Wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice for these units, especially 31 as we have a friend who lives close to there but since we will have our gear we would be willing to travel.

Also, any advice for 1st time DIY backpacker hunters on things that we will need that we might overlook or not think of.

We are from SC so camping to us isnt the same as what we will encounter out there.

Thanks for any help,

Rick

If your friend lives close, have him get boots on the ground and scout for you. Cover his fuel expenses for scouting trips, and make it worth his while when you get there to hunt (buy dinner, beers, etc.) In general, do the right thing & show your buddy his efforts are appreciated!

As for gear choices, you've found an excellent resource here to reference. Read, read, and READ some more! You've got metric tons of info to wade thru...

Good luck & have fun!

a friend and I drew the same tags, it does not sound like a backpack hunt at all but we are going into it with high expectations, maybe we will run into you out there

KMD- Thanks for the advice and your right culling through all the info is great, alot of good stuff.

Brushape- my buddy wants to base camp to be the Residence Inn in Grand Junction, however I'm wanting to stay out on the mountain. Going in with high expectations as well but after eating 3 days worth of dehydrated food we will see. As I always have to remind myself, its about the adventure/memories more than the kill. Keep up with me and if my friend gets any intel on herds, happy to pass it on.

Right on, I will definitly keep in touch. We plan on camping up around the border of 21&30 with a truck/tent camp and staying mobile. We have a friend that lives in unit 22 that is helping out a little but he is old and purely a road hunter.

Remember it is only a 5 day season I wouldn't want to be driving back and forth to grand junction too much, we will be up the Tuesday night before the season to get a couple days scouting in

Sounds good, we are looking in and around unit 31. We will have a truck and tent as well trying to keep mobile. We should be up there Wed morning to scout as well.
