CO Unit 55 First Season Rifle

Hey guys, I recently drew my first ever first season rifle tag for Unit 55. This will be my first elk hunt in the area, looking to backpack the whole trip. Would appreciate any advice about tactics for this time of year and good locations to check, or anyone's past experiences with the area. Had been looking at the Fossil Ridge Wilderness initially. I shot my first Elk in 55 last year. I am willing to help you out. I am located in Tulsa and would be willing to tell you what I know.

I hunted it last season and can only tell you where they aren't at it was a tag soup first try

Another Tulsan here. We have hunted 55 two of the last 3 years archery. Typically up north right on the edge of 48.

We have been in elk both years. Had a 300"+ bull the first year at 23 yards....full draw....needed one step. Didn't happen.

Fossil ridge was always really busy during archery so we stayed out. PM me if you're interested and I can at least give you a few places to start in other areas.

We usually hunt the last week, so they won't move too far before 1st season I would think.
