So my father and I are burning our points this fall for 49 archery tags. I have fished in the unit but I have never spent time looking for elk. Last year I took my first bull with a bow but unfortunately my father who just turned 60 hasnt been able to seal the deal after 6 years of chasing those bastards in the san jauns. My main focus is getting him an elk. I live on the Front Range so I will be spending the first half of the season scouting/hunting. I will also be putting in a ton of miles scouting over the summer. If any of yall have spent time in this unit and feel like sharing information I would be very grateful.
Thanks Hombres

Chaza, I hunted it in 2012 archery. I had a blast and saw a ton of elk. I doubt it has changed much since then. Everywhere I went in the unit I found elk. I found that when I went the elk were bedding on north facing slopes and coming over and down to feed at night and reversing the process in the morning.

The unit is very open and conducive to glassing. That's what I would do. Don't be afraid of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness. It is small by wilderness standards and has lots of elk.

I did get chased up a tree by a moose, so be careful of rutting bull moose!

Friend shot a raghorn there a few years ago. Sad thing is he passed on him a day earlier, and had seen bigger bulls. We are trying to decide if we want to hunt 48 this year or wait for 49.

Lots more private in 49, so cuts down on the land available to hunt.

That said I have only ever seen it from across the road. Never set foot in it.

That's good news, I am going to get out this summer and really explore a bunch of areas. Bucksmasher did you take a bull 2012?

No, but as sometimes happens while hunting with archery tackle it wasn't for lack of finding and seeing.
