New to elk hunting. I have been chasing whitetails since my youth. I am finally branching out and giving it a shot for elk in mid October. Any one have any advice on this unit or area? I know I can watch a ton of youtube and hunting videos, but I'm sure it is nothing compared to the real thing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Start with the Colrado Parks and Wildlife website. Their interactive hunting map is a great resource to learn property boundaries and elk habits throughout the season. Good luck

Thanks. I have printed the guide and checked out their maps, even called the biologist. It helps a bit. Has anyone had any experience with this unit? Any glassing areas, looks to be pretty thick.

Bring chains. There are some nasty roads in 42. They might be fine (just rough) if its dry, but that can change pretty quickly with some moisture.

I grew up hunting unit 42 back in the 80's, but haven't hunted it since probably 1991. Ya, for 2nd rifle you most likely will need chains. I remember ruts 2 feet deep back in the 80's........have no idea what they'd be like these days. The hunting used to be great in there, but like everywhere else with pressure.......who knows.

Gas activity and logging went crazy about 7-8 years back. Really messed up the hunting around there. Seems like it has come back though.

But the roads sure haven't changed. Ruts, rocks, 3 foot deep mud holes...there has been a lot of vehicle damage in in that unit. Ha!
