I'm a CO resident and plan to burn my points this year on a GMU 49 tag. I've got 6 PP and it sounds like this tag would be my best option. I live in NOCO and plan to scout the unit at least 4 or 5 times this summer, but between being a small business owner and having two kids my scouting plans never turn out to be what I hoped. Any help with a point in a general direction would sure be appreciated. Thanks, Brad

I am dumb for not burning my points this year on 49. With the fire and the closed off areas last year this will be the year to have that tag. I just can’t make it happen this year.

I've seen deer come back to burn areas after a year, but it seems like it takes longer for the elk. I haven't hunted a bunch of burn areas so I could be wrong. Also, I should have said that this will be an archery tag. TIA, Brad

My point isn’t so much of the elk actually being in the burnt areas. There was quite a big hunk blocked off from access from what I have been told. No hunters were in there shooting those elk. So none of those bulls got killed. Should be a great year. Good luck.

Your 6 PPs may not be enough now

Man I sure hope that isnt the case. I'm sure they still gave out the entire quota of tags for that unit, and there a bunch of them between all of the seasons. Brad

2 of the biggest bulls I've ever seen in Co were in that unit 49....one a 360 class.

That was many years ago....so i have no idea if that unit is as good as it used to be...but my gut says its fantastic.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing. I only have 4pp though. I probably won't draw the unit with only 4pp. Is this the Brad I have been texting with? I don't have your PM any more shooo couldn't check the name.

Certainly posting things like this will additional hunter applications to the unit, I can't figure out why guys continue to make references to specific units. If you want to hunt a unit, then just hunt the damn unit. If you hunted the unit before and feel obliged to offer insight then do it via PM.

It’s so true. Even found myself checking out 49 on onX after reading this thread.

Lol, for any new hunters looking for a unit, we should just pick a unit and brag on it, so everyone looking piles in there, and keeps our personal unit from overcrowding, I nominate unit 49, it contains bigger bulls and fewer hunters than any other unit in CO, a man can hunt for weeks and never see another soul. Yep, unit 49 it is, it’s just a terrific underhunted unit with real trophy potential, overrun with raghorns. if you can’t get a bull in unit 49, then you were asleep at the wheel. It’s an especially good unit for nonresident newbies as they’re almost certain to connect on a good branch antlered bull. And veteran trophy hunters will like it as they stand a very good chance of taking a 350+ bull.
