I will be going on my first ever elk hunt next September. This is going to be a DIY public lands hunt, and I'm looking for advice/recommendations from you all. I have a Hennessey Hammock and a Kuiu 15* bag. After getting in the bag, it feels very restrictive as I generally sleep on my side and stomach. After reading several threads, I have started to research the EE revelation 10* quilt and am interested in hearing your thoughts on which system would be a better fit (Kuiu mummy bag vs EE quilt). I can still return the Kuiu bag since i just purchased it a few weeks ago. Im 6'1 and 215 if that matters. Im typically a warm sleeper as well. Also, can you recommend an under quilt for the hammock. Thanks.

Hey Senior Chief, a late welcome to RS. I may or may not have spent some time in the Navy, may or may not have spent some time on some ships or boats, and may or may not have been carrying some nukes.:D

Anyway.......can't comment on the hammock stuff, I don't even like them in the back yard. But I too can't stand being restricted in a mummy bag so went the quilt route on top of an Xtherm pad, and I love it. I'm a cold sleeper though so got the 0 degree, even for September. Good luck with your choices.

I've never used a hammock, but September in CO has been handled nicely by my 20* EE quilt and NeoAir mattress. I tend to sleep on both sides during the night and cannot stand a mummy bag.

So I've decided to return the Kuiu bag, and got in on the EE group buy. I went with the 0* in long/wide. Now I'm trying to decide between the xtherm or exped ul7 pad. I'm hoping to avoid getting and under quilt in order to save weight on my sleep system. Which pad would be the better choice? This system will be used during archery season (late September) in colorado. I am a warm sleeper and would prefer a system where I wouldn't have to wear a lot, if any, clothing to sleep in. Please share your thoughts/recommendations. Thanks.

You really need to wait until the end of March for a pad. Exped and Xtherm are both bringing lighter , warmer , and supposedly quieter pads out. The new Expeds specs are amazing and Xtherm is quieting theirs down. If all the promises are even close to true then it's a big win for everyone. They're going to sell a bunch of pads and we're going to get some real improvements. I love my Exped UL9 Synmat.

I love the exped ul7. I would also wait and see if what the upgrades really are, maybe people will be motivated to sell to upgrade. I doubt I'll be changing current ul7 works great for me

I did the opposite. I just picked up a Xtherm long that was marked down on clearance for 165 bucks from Rock/Creek with free shipping. Just got it in the mail today. I will also be using it with my new Enlightened Equipment 20 degree quilt that I bought on Mass Drop.

Shrek (or anybody else with experience using this bag...), I just picked up a used Western Mountaineering badger, and was wondering what you think would be the best compatible pad to go with that bag to save on weight. I think I read somewhere that you thought the badger was a little too warm when combined with the pad you have. Because I haven't bought a pad yet, im wondering (and hoping) that I can match a light pad with it to remain warm, but not too hot down to the 15 degree range, and up to the 40 degree range as well. IM looking at the Exped UL7 medium wide at the moment. Its only a 3.3 R value, but its 26 inches wide which is a plus for me at 5'8 inches, and 200 pounds who likes to side sleep, and WILL toss around some.

If exped offers the new winterlite in a wide version, it might we worth a look too. I need to dig around some more on the xtherm I guess too....not to familiar with it yet. I do know the current one would drive me insane with its potato chip sound....that WONT work for me.

you thoughts??
