I will be hunting Second rifle for mule deer and my hunting buddy will be hunting elk during the same season. We plan on going into the Wim wilderness area. Any advice would be welcomed.

Tough.. I could tell you more about where not to go, than where to go. I covered a lot of miles, all on foot. There is a lot of "dead water." I found some really great looking country, glassed a few great mule deer bucks, but went 4 or 5 days before I found elk. I completely relocated and found elk late in the trip, but only had one real opportunity and was not able to close the distance.

There is a lot of human traffic, so be prepared for that.

There are elk in both units for sure. As tough as the hunt was, I look forward to going back to make it right.

Send me a PM if you want some more info if you drew that tag!
Hey jlsmith214, can't PM as a new member but myself and a few buddies are archery hunting 77/771/78 this year during archery. Would love to revive this thread and hear what people have to say about the units. None of us have any experience elk hunting at all, this is a true first. We are all doing a ton of research, e-scouting, and planning summer scout trips. We wanna do this right. Any information/recommendations you or anyone else could share would be great. Not looking for waypoints, more so looking for general recommendations about elk hunting or the terrain or anything else for guys who have never done this before. Thanks in advance! Feel free to text me 6103506311 if you dont wanna share something on here

I’d give Ty Smith a call (CPO). He’s got a lot of good info regarding Outfitting locations, busy trailheads, beetle kill, etc.

Thanks for reaching out, I'll definitely do that. I've been trying to do a lot of e-scouting and get focused on some areas before calling out to local conservation officers/biologists so I have some specific questions to ask them rather than just generally asking "where's good" and getting the typical answer they give everyone else who calls.
