CO 3rd or 4th season?

Flip side to this is that you have already had 30 years of hunting whitetail in the rut, burn the points on the best season for mulies.

That being said, you should do the hunts that makes you happy. If whitetail are higher, prioritize. Thats kinda why I keeping building elk points and choosing low point deer hunts to go on…

I feel like with this plan, I can do both. Had hoped to do a September mzl hunt, but I'm no longer fit enough for the high country with heart failure.

I’m in the very early phase of planning my first big game hunt and was leaning towards going for 3rd rifle as a CO resident. Hunting the rut in 4th sounds awesome, but it seems like 3rd may be a better learning experience for finding deer, even if I don’t manage to tag one.

Coin flip for sure… big bucks could get tagged in 2 or 3 if the weather lines up, 4th is more traditionally the rut…. But you could be looking at leftover animals… unit you mentioned is similar to some I hunt. Really hard to know if 3rd or 4th will be THE season it varies year to year, better chance at weather during 4th that’s for sure, this year wasn’t that way

I’m thinking about burning my points in 27 in unit 61 2 nd rifle. Looks like I can draw with what I have. To many point differences for 3 rd season . What woukd your opinion be for 2nd season in 61?

I hunted 61 elk 3rd season in 2022 for myself and with my sister in 2023. This was the biggest buck I saw between those two seasons. I personally would not recommend it as a deer unit for the amount of points it requires.

@Ucsdryder picked up a reissued buck tag for 61 3rd in 2023. He can speak more on it

I’ll second that. I had an archery elk tag there a few years ago. Hunted high but still saw almost zero deer. This year I could draw 61 fourth season deer with 19 points but I’m not even considering it. Saw all I need to see.

Thank you , that woukd be a disappointment . I currently have 13 points and just turned 66 last week. I woukd hate to invest 14 years next year and only see this. I hunted elk in 62 back in 13 thinking 61woujd be awesone being a trophy unit and knowing where it’s and finding an outfitter at sport show . I will say in 13 hunting 62 I only seen deer one day and was a few doe.

Call the biologist or game warden for the area and ask where the migration routes are. If you are hunting in the area where they migrate to, it may not make a big difference which season you hunt.

I hunted elk in 62 back in 13 thinking 61woujd be awesone being a trophy unit and knowing where it’s and finding an outfitter at sport show .
