Howdy, I am new to Rokslide and elk hunting as a whole haha. I drew a second rifle elk tag for this upcoming fall in CO, was hoping to gather any advice y'all would be willing to send my way!

Find out how elk in the unit(s) you are hunting move as winter approaches. Many herds migrate which can effect not only the area you find elk but also how many elk will remain in your unit.

Also figure out access. This will help you understand not only the areas you can start your hunt but also where pressure from other hunters will most likely come from.

Set your expectations low. the chances of you being a new hunter and finding and killing elk in your first or second year is low. Take a few scouting/camping trips to the area that you drew the tag in, walk around the area(off trail) looking for old sign and good habitat. find good access points and good glassing spots. Second rifle is tough but ive killed every bull ive ever killed in second rifle season. it can be done

If you've never been in the area before, the best move you can do is to get out there on foot and look around and do some hiking, mark potential camp spots and such. 2nd rifle they'll probably be in different locations than they are now but if you can familiarize yourself a little bit with the area and road systems and trails it'll help a lot keeping wasted time to a minimum when it comes to the hunting.
