Hey everyone. New hunter primarily going after whitetail and bear as they are the most prevalent big game in my area. I am currently collecting all my gear and clothing and was wondering what you guys do for scent control. I like the idea of buying clothing that works for hunting but also I can wear it throughout the year as quality garments aren’t cheap. What are some of the things you guys do to minimize or mask your scent besides playing the wind?

Scent free detergent. Scent eliminator spray. Scent free bags for all garments. Rubber boots

All tactics I use now hunting. Still wind direction is key.

What do you mean scent free bags? Sorry if this is a silly question.

They sell bags that do not allow scent to permeate through them. Some people use a heavy trash bag and tie off the top. I have a roll top waterproof bag that doesn’t smell like rubber or plastic. I put my line dried cloths into it and when I get to camp
I tear off a cedar branch and drop it in the bag. If you can leave the bag outside of the house and away from the campfire it helps.

Great advice thanks

Just wash your clothes in scent free detergent and use unscented soap when you take a shower and unscented deodorant. Many people make the mistake of thinking that animals smell your clothing when in actuality they are smelling you and your human scent. Humans have a scent that our noses aren't advanced enough to detect and it is impossible to become scent free. I believe all products that claim to be scent eliminating like clothing, sprays, cover scents, etc are purely gimmicks and have zero effect in real world conditions. The only option is to hunt the wind IMO.

Fred Bear and Chuck Adams, amongst many others killed a ton of critters with a bow w/o any of this scent eliminating stuff. Perhaps it helps, but obviously not needed to take game.

With new study's showing most of our scent come out of our mouths I am baffled by people wasting money on scent control. Wind wind and wind is all that works.

Play the wind!
Play the wind!
Wash your clothes somewhat regularly or when you feel they may be too smelly with scent free detergent of your choice (which in itself is another rabbit hole to jump into).
I store mine in plastic garbage bags to try and keep house scents as low as possible, and then in totes.
But the bottom line is that deer and bear have such powerful noses and we very well may not be able to stop them from smelling us.

The last sentence is the most important. I used to be a scent control nazi. It took the fun out of hunting. Now I use zero scent control and hunt the wind. I still have mature deer that act like they can't smell me with a snout full of it. I have had deer nose a decoy for several minutes after I stopped using any scents or scent control of any kind. I have also had the normal reaction where deer get a little whiff and turn inside out with no scent control and crazy scent control. If you think it helps, do it. If not, my success has actually gotten better due to improved skills than when I used to agonize over scent.

Scent control does take the fun out of hunting a bit, I agree. I now just use scent free laundry detergent and shampoo. Keep my clothing hung outside during the season. Probably wouldn’t stop to fill up the truck with gas on the way to the woods either. I used to do much more than all that …. Can’t fool a deers nose.

I’m still waiting to find a buck that’s attracted to the smell of Copenhagen I guess

I Play the wind/thermals. Only thing that works for me. Do the scent free laundry detergent and enter into stand according to wind as best I can. Have an Ozonics HR 500 and have used it and have mixed results with it. I’ve had deer 15 yards down wind with the unit running and they never smelled me. But on the flip side I’ve also had an old doe at 50 yards down wind while using the Ozonics and she blew until the was in the next county. Hope you find this helpful. Let me know if you find the golden ticket! Good luck

Unscented detergent and this enzyme stuff my wife uses to destench all my cloths. I also use unscented deodorant. I am not a believer in the orange bottled stuff and don't waste money on it.

I use grangers on all my way over priced hunting stuff but don’t keep in scent proof totes it’s all hanging in my man cave/ bow shop. All that scent killer crap is a joke to take folks money you won’t fool a deer or bears nose period. Hunt the wind go to your stands or hunting spot only when the wind is right. I’ve killed deer after work smelling like a goats butt even after church smelling like a French hooker from the cologne On my clothes. Hunted the wind no issues but other times I’ve had deer smell me with a stiff wind in my face as well even using dead down wind soap etc.. stuff don’t work just makes us feel better kinda like camo just sit still
