I'm sitting on 2 broken chronos and would like to get something more reliable. What are the new more reliable options? Fwiw, the ones I have currently are the magnetospeed Sporter and a cheap Caldwell.

I've had a LabRadar for the past 5 years. The same can be said for most of the gun writers I know. No issues between all of us. Not cheap but they work. I was excited to try a MagnetoSpeed too. Bummer.

How did you break what you have

The MS gave erratic readings after a few months of use. It started after using a muzzle brake. I've since moved on to suppressed and would need to v3 anyhow.

The Caldwell has a short in the display and recently started to throw 50-90mps for every shot.

Only reason I ask is I’ve had both and both have the same readings. Labradar is the best of the best and if you need a v3 I’d skip and go straight to it.

I had a magneto V3 for the last few years. Recently picked up a Labradar and am glad I did. Ease of use and the ability to switch between multiple rifles without changing anything is awesome. Not to mention being able to grab speeds without a change in point of impact throughout an entire shooting session is really nice

I always struggled with the Caldwell type chronos for rifles. Seem to work fine for archery. I’m using a Magnetospeed sporter for my non-suppressed rifles and have had good success with it.

I went through them all and wound up witha Labradar. It works and with an auxiliary trigger is more reliable. I find the user interface really cumbersome though. The menu sucks. It’s not intuitive for me. Switching between shot strings is a pita. Maybe that’s just me. I bring a note book and just write down my readings.

I've read good and bad reviews for both the Labradar and the MagSpeed. I've had a Mag V3 for three years without a hiccup. Just my sample of 1.
Sure, it affects POI. I put it on the rifle to get velocity readings, then I take it off and shoot for groups. It's not the huge issue that it's made out to be.

The timing of this thread is impeccable. After 3 years my magnetospeed v3 is constantly missing shots and giving bad readings. I’ve replaced the batteries a few times and messed with the settings but still having issues. I really enjoyed it until this year and have been torn on getting another v3 vs springing for the labradar.

Have you contacted MagnetoSpeed to see if they can help you out?

Yeah. They gave me a couple items to check for but it’s continued to have issues. I recently changed from 9V to cr123 but haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet with them. They say it helps provide more consistent and longer lasting power. If it doesn’t help I plan to call them back. If I recall correctly they also offered to sell me a new bayonet last time I called

I know this was directed at Txlite but I did and my experience was that they're willing to help over the phone or email if you can make contact. After that it seems they're pretty selective on warranty. They did however replace a lost v-block for free.

there is a new doppler out that is about a fourth the size of a LR and does more than the LR. the catch is that it costs about twice as much.

i use a LR and like it.

I’ve been using a Caldwell for at least 5 years. I love it and highly doubt that I would ever buy something else. Very easy to set up and use.

I can buy RCBS locally at fleetfarm, any opinions on that? Not that I could not have one mailed. Not that it should drive my choice, but I got fleet farm gift cards too. Not they don't have other stuff

Looks like I am not in your price range, so probably laughing at my fleet farm post.

No, lower cost is better. I just want a reliable system since I've been thru a few unreliable ones. If it takes $600 to do that then I will pay it. When I add up the cost of other chronos I've owned I could easily have spent that one time and been done.
