It's been a great run for my Kifaru BT1. But like the old saying goes, all good things come to an end. I've packed out quite a few animals both mine and my buddies with this pack that was signed in red "Reaper".

It's time to move on. Should I wait for the new year to see what's coming? Or is something out there already that can't be beat?

I should mention I'm looking for a pack that can pull double duty in packing camp in for a 7-10 day hunt, packs elk size animals out, and compacts down to daypack hunting size mode.

SG 5900 KRUX Frame.

SG tighten up so tidy to the frame. I use an older model Sky 7400 that cinches down to nothing. Weight penalty is minimal to go from a 5000 to a larger 7000+ pack. I have a smaller pack, but never put it on the frame. The 5900 has a big panel zip much like their Solo. I think its the best pack on the market right now. Lightweight, durable, and has the functional features I look for as far as organization/zipper layout, etc.

Do you have an immediate need for the pack? If not, it's probably worth waiting. There always seems to be new equipment coming out over the winter months.

Whatever fits you and your budget. There are lots of good packs out there. I'm partial to stone glacier, but my son has got lots of good use out of the $150 mystery ranch glacier from sierra trading Post.

Well, your in the golden age of hunting packs. Back in the day, a decent hunting pack was anything brown. Usually a one compartment bag with a couple straps and you know what... they worked. Today's high-end packs are all pretty great. I use a Stone Glacier 6900 and it's no exception. Ultimately though, it will be the conditioning of the person hauling it that will provide the most noticeable improvements, regardless of brand.

Partially agree. We are definitely in a Golden Age for gear. The new equipment is phenomenal, and seems to be getting better with every year.

But, I just found my pack from 25 years ago, it was buried in my store room. It was a mid to high end pack at the time. I tried it on, and no way would I want to use that again. I was quite surprised at the progression and difference. My memory had turned it into a better pack then it was :)

Oh, I wouldn't choose my old pack over what I use now either. That said, every critter I used that old pack for, made it to the freezer.

I got to test out the Initial Ascent pack this year. I was really surprised how much I liked it over my old duplex frame. For me the dual rated lumbar pad was perfect. Most of the newest packs are designed exactly for what your wanting pack camp in then compress for day pack. If your not married to Kifaru I'd check on some of the new offerings industry wide some will definitely surprise you. If your staying with kifaru I'd wait and see that they are releasing for next season.

Nope I can hold off. I will use it for one last Mule Deer hunt in January.

Do yourself a favor and take a hard look at the EXO packs. On my 4th pack and the new EXO is hands down the best I have used, Customer service/professionalism is second to none. There are a lot of great packs available but side by side the quality difference is unmistakable. Just my opinion! Also the podcast is pretty awesome as well.

I just snagged a SG Sky Guide for the same thing you want to use your for, just substitute elk for moose. The bag compresses almost down to nothing to. However I haven't been able to test it out yet (got it last week and haven't started my wannabe sheep shape program). Fit and finish looks awesome.
