Choice of 7mm for bull elk

If you can’t watch it all, just watch the last 30 seconds. Good stuff!

A "test" designed to reinforce the author's previously stated bias?

The OP here asked about two 7mm that he already owns. Why are guys bringing up .22LR and .223? None of the usual suspects even suggested it.

None of the elk that I have shot had beef knuckles in front of their vitals... Nevermind that the guy who posted that video has claimed that elk have 12" of muscle of their vitals and that the hide of a bull elk is somehow tougher during the rut.

I highly suggest about using a match bullet for hunting and highly recommend a different bullet than the ELD bullets.

That’s coming from myself as an outfitter and several other outfitters that have seen constant failures

Clients that can't shoot are the issue...blaming the bullet is a convenient excuse though for sure.

I can’t believe people actually try a 223 on elk like what’s the gain, I guess if you hit the elk perfect a 22 lr can kill it too but give the animal some respect and go with a decent calibre. That’s my opinion.
And guess what your opinion is worth!
Nothin

Not sure why that link to that video was shared in this thread?

Op is wondering what rifle he should use of the two that he owns. The best advice would be to put a better scope on either one of them and practice.

I’m glad yours is worth everything. Not sure, why don’t you ask the guy who posted the video. I simply stated use a tsx or partition for whichever gun. Then responded directly to the guy who posted the video, see how I wasn’t responding to the OP, just talkin with the video poster.

The old Burris scope definitely needs to go but I'm surprised the Leopold gets some downvotes (for durability and not holding zero I presume) on Rokslide . I haven't had a problem with it (yet!) but I'll keep an eye on it. Seems Trijicon has a good rep.

Patrick Smith, founder of Kifaru, said this about the hierarchy of killing power decades ago:
1. Shot placement. 2. Shot placement. 3. Shot placement. 4. Use enough bullet. 5. Use enough gun.

This still

I’ve seen failures with perfect shots. You must be one perfect shot to always hit exactly where you’re aiming…. Or ur one of the guys that pulls the “exactly where I meant” every shot.

So im curious since you’re the perfect shooter, whats the perfect shot? Is it in the pocket, 6” behind the pocket, spine, high shoulder, neck? I mean I think eastmans suggests the high shoulder, newberg is the high lung. But let’s say the client likes the high shoulder shot, 250
Yards and the bullet explodes on the shoulder, is it the bullet or the shot placement? You’re telling me every single bullet will never ever fail ever and it’s just cause of the shooter.

The 7-08 has a Leopold VX-3i in 3.5 - 10 40mm w. B&C reticle. I'm replacing the 7mag scope with something new. The 7mag is a wood stock Ruger M77 MarkII with a new barrel from Preferred. Currently it has an old Burris 3x9 on it. I'm thinking a Trijicon (Huron??) in something about 2.5 - 12 but open to any ideas. I like the simple hold overs on the B&C and looking for something similar. I like the durability opinions on the Trijicon. Dialing seems intriguing but a SFP with a basic hold over reticle seems like it would be sufficient out to 300 yds or so. Again, open to opinions though.

Trijicon scopes are very solid. If your 300yd and in, nothing wrong with a standard SFP.

i believed the video was relevant since there were talks of using target designed bullets… tmk/eldm. Regardless of caliber.

The ole bullet can’t make it through the shoulder argument again huh.

The old Burris is probably better than the vx3 lol.
The vx3 cds scopes are complete trash.

But yes a reliable scope is so worth it. Above all else. You need a scope and set up you can 100% trust.

Let say that look at 25 clients shooting ELD-X and 25 clients shooting something else.

The outfitter is saying that he has seen the ELD-X group loose more animals that the other group.

Is it a perfect, statistcally valid experiment? Probably not.
Should it be completely dismissed as irrelevant? Also probably not...
