Choice of 7mm for bull elk

Have you had bad experiences with the TTSX? I'm most likely to use the Accubond but I'm still curious.

I have experience with a big 7, TSX, and Elk and they work just fine but I would drop to the 140 ish versions and run mv at about 3400.
The 3-08 and 140 AB should also work mid velocity but I have no experience with those.

I highly suggest about using a match bullet for hunting and highly recommend a different bullet than the ELD bullets.

That’s coming from myself as an outfitter and several other outfitters that have seen constant failures

Accubond is hard to beat in any caliber. Monos are great with speed and bone involvement preferably the shoulder 🍖

I run the TTSX in my rifles, haven’t had any problems yet with several elk and deer in short to mid ranges. My buddy shoots cutting edge bullets.

Personally we began going to all monolithic bullets because we’re sure that CO is going to go to non toxic bullets in the future. We wanted to be ahead of the game since we reloaded everything now.

It’s awesome to see there’s actually people on Rokslider that don’t shoot ELD’s and SK’s for Big Game.

To be fair, I shoot just about anything at big game except V-Max (or similar), FMJs, and monolithics. I’ve killed more deer with Core-Lokts or Gamekings than with anything else. I just get sick of seeing people disparage bullets I know work very well.

Unless I start hunting with .50 BMG, I expect “perfect shot placement” every time I pull the trigger on a big game animal. If you hit them in the heart, lungs, or CNS and a good expanding bullet at the right impact velocity, they are going to die the same whether it’s a .243 or a .300 WM. I estimate that 99% of the hunters I know have zero business shooting at big game at ranges where the .300 WM has a real advantage over a .243. And, at ranges at which they are competent, a .243 is overpowered.

Should have added.....

7mm-08. Its a lighter rifle and you wont notice much difference in ballistic performance if your max range is 400.

That makes sense. I have a stockpile of monolithic bullets for the same reason.

OP, do both rifles have reliable scopes aboard?
The 7-08 has a Leopold VX-3i in 3.5 - 10 40mm w. B&C reticle. I'm replacing the 7mag scope with something new. The 7mag is a wood stock Ruger M77 MarkII with a new barrel from Preferred. Currently it has an old Burris 3x9 on it. I'm thinking a Trijicon (Huron??) in something about 2.5 - 12 but open to any ideas. I like the simple hold overs on the B&C and looking for something similar. I like the durability opinions on the Trijicon. Dialing seems intriguing but a SFP with a basic hold over reticle seems like it would be sufficient out to 300 yds or so. Again, open to opinions though.

I'd be looking at a reliable optic rather than trying to decide between the existing rifles.

Look up the scope evaluations here to help steer your decision making process.

Personally I've shot half dozen bulls with nearly the same setup. 7mag with 160AB . Zeroed for Mpbr hold top of back at 400 and it works. Don't over think it. If you're staying inside your stated ranges it should be a good way to go.

Put the Trijicon on the 7mm mag and shoot whatever it likes best.
Elk= bonded bullets for me fyi.

Sir I don’t have an issue with any bullet you choose it’s your hunt it’s your choice. I’ve used quite a few different types myself.
