Unfortunately I live at the beach, it’s just terrible I know. But I have an issue of not having enough space in my rental condo. I do have a rather large covered balcony, but am concerned about it being outside.

Thoughts on coastal weather affecting the freezer itself and running/cooling efficiency throughout the year. It can be as hot as 100 degrees in summer and as cold as barely freezing temps in winter.

Any recommendations on brand and size would be helpful too. I have read over some other threads and seem to find that a lot of people own a 7cft chest freezer, to hold a mixture of deer/fish/turkeys.

I lived on the beach from '89-95...Daytona Beach and hated it. I was born and raised in Colorado and a job relocation from my Father's company during my senior year of high school forced me to move. I got back to CO asap and will never live near another ocean again. That said, buy whatever freezer you like. We have a standup in FL and I have a chest freezer now.

I have a upright freezer in the garage with no problem. Not sure on the size but it was about the size of my refrigerator. We had about 120 pounds of elk and deer burger in it and was about 1/3 full. Brand is up to you. I found mine at a warehouse for damage stuff, it had a small dent but it was half price. Bad part I live in Minnesota where you can put you food outside for 3 months. But the summer get hot. If you worried just wrap a blanket around, should help.

I’ve had a chest freezer outside in BC where it gets -20F and it ran fine. I’d try to keep rain and snow off the lid so the unit does not freeze shut...poly tarp or under an eve, etc. I’d also try to shade it from the sun....N side, or cover with an insulated blanket and poly tarp. Do let the back and bottom exchange heat...don’t tarp the entire freezer.

We’ve got two upright freezers about 20 Cu Ft each, and a 12 and a 6 cu ft chest freezer too. The chest freezers go hunting either the gen set for power to bring home critters in warm weather...size depending on the critter hunted. The uprights store all our food including bones for the Vizsla.

Good luck with it.

How much stuff do you want to freeze? Figure on 30-35 lbs of meat per cubic foot. Upright are easier to organize and access. Chest tend to be more energy efficient. Chest lose less cold air when open than upright.

We got the GE 10.6 Cu. Ft. chest model a couple years ago and it has been great so far.
