Chest freezer recommendations

I'd try to steer you towards an upright instead. Little less efficient, a lot more convenient.

Either way, don't get an auto defrost or frost free model. Manual defrost is what you are after.

I picked up a Danby from Costco a few years back. In my area, they still carry the same model. It's been great and I believe it was on sale for $149. It's been great. No issues.

I agree that the frost-free stand-ups are nice. They really save on space. Can be spendy, but I'm happy I didn't have to rearrange anything in my garage.

I'll second this. My chest freezer is sitting in my basement unused because it's a PITA to dig stuff out of there when you want it.

Agree with this 100 percent. I had a chest freezer for years and refused to jump on the upright bandwagon. Finally did after a lot of coaxing from friends. Wish I would've done it a lot sooner. So much nicer.

Handful of people mentioned an upright and i hated mine. Stuffed the freezer to the 9’s once and shelves came crashing down because of the weight. Granted the freezer wasn’t very large which didn’t help. I have a 17’ cubic foot Frigidaire that i really like. Last couple years we’ve harvested 2 elk and 2 deer and still got room for lots of Costco goods.

I have a 5 cf and a 12.5 cf chest freezers - not really a fan of uprights for long term storage of meat.

Make sure the freezer is not frost free - that just means it thaws and freezes continually and will give you freezer burn more than a non-frost free freezer.

Haven’t had a problem with long term storage of meat in an upright. Have found it a pain to dig through a chest freezer.

Chest freezers are for freezing dead coons and coyotes before a trip to the fur buyer, uprights are for food . Id never go back.

I have one of each, I will agree with everyone that the upright is way more convenient. I like the chest for the burger/steaks/sausage and the upright for literally everything else.

I have a 5 cu ft chest freezer that sits unplugged in my basement as my "backup freezer" in case I have overflow from my upright. As numerous folks mentioned above, get an upright, it is so convenient. In mine I have a shelf for burger, shelf for large muscle groups, shelf for processed items like sausage and jerky, and a shelf for geese breasts and whole ducks. The door shelving is used for the smaller quantity items like backstrap, steaks, duck breasts, deer hearts, and bones, etc.

No more digging around looking for something. Another bonus is it keeps me eating the oldest items first versus whatever is on top and easy to get to.

Get an upright! Then no one in your house can use your chest freezer as a storage shelf or laundry folding table.

i thought i was the only one with this problem. every time i want to get in there it's loaded on top with clothes.

I got the costco hisense. So far it’s been great. I also have an older one I got at Walmart. No issues with it either. I don’t have an issue finding meat. I organize it when I get it from the professor. Burger on one side, then steaks and roasts on the other. I put the tenderloins on the bottom so people keep their grubby mitts off them.
