I have other shotguns but generally defer to my 20 gauge Franchi for most things. I'm considering a cheap combo 12 for dual use. I've got a Kodiak deer hunt coming up and I'll be taking a shotgun for a little duck hunting, and perhaps for bear protection. Given that I probably use a 12 gauge once a year, it seems like I could part with a few other guns and just have the basics for when I do need one.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with any of these cheap 12 gauge combos.

1. Mossberg 88 Combo - This one is CHEAP. From what I understand it's basically a basic 500 design with a different safety. I'll probably not enjoy the fit and finish but it's a $270 setup.

2. Mossberg 500 Combo - A bit more money but still very affordable. Top safety vs. side on the 88. From what I've read it's a little nicer quality over the 88.

3. Winchester SXP Combo - I have experience shooting old 1300s and also the newer SXPs. Similar price to the 500. I don't LOVE the feel of these over the old 1300 but I know they're very functional.

4. Other? Find an old 870 and a spare barrel?

Last year, I bought a 20g Mossberg Deer/Field combo with a regular barrel and a rifled barrel. The rifled barrel has the cantilever mount for a scope. As a result, I don't have to resight it in every time time I swap barrels. It works fine. No complaints.

I considered a Mossberg 88 Slug gun, but my understanding was the receivers are not drilled and tapped for a scope. Since I planned to use a small scope, I passed on it.

When I lived in CT, I bought a SXP Turkey 20 gauge to use as a slug gun. It functioned well. My only complaint was there is ZERO aftermarket support.
