What options would work well for a shorter barreled gun that would be used for busting through thick oak. Both in hand and strapped to pack?
It depends on how short of a barrel you are planning on running. If you are over 13 inches then I would suggest the Element 4.0. The Element is going to give you additional forend to grab onto without making the overall rifle longer.

might be a dumb question, but will factory mags work in the chassis? i have one on order and want all of my ducks in a row when it gets here. i guess the real question is, what will i need beyond the chassis, butt stock, and grip? i will be irritated with myself if it shows up and i have to wait again for that little part i didn't know i needed.... i would rather get everything ready so when it's done i can get the ball rolling on shooting it.

That probably depends on which action you are using. On their list (Element 4.0) they show one model Tikka (T1) and the CZ use a factory mag, the rest I assume use AICS pattern mags.

  • Detachable Magazines: Yes, the Element 4.0 chassis system comes standard with an integrated detachable box magazine system (Magazine sold separately).
  • Magazine Type: The Element 4.0 chassis system Utilizes AICS pattern magazines.

@BBob is correct that you will need AICS pattern magazines. now unfortunately the tikka actions are not compatible with plastics AICS magazines so you will need to use steel AICS magazines like those sold on our site. If you are not sure which one to purchase please give us a call.
Will you be at the western hunting expo?
We will be at Western Hunting Expo!!! Booth #4359. Please stop by and see us.

Any plans on a tikka t1x inlet atom?

Do you guys offer any kind of military or first responder discount?
At this time we are not planning on inletting the ATOM for anything other than 700's unless there is a ton of demand for a specific action. So unfortunately nothing in the near future.
May I ask why you would want an ATOM for that 22 over the Element?

Specifically for my 17 hmr with a folder. To have the smallest possible package as it’s a take everywhere gun for me. To have the ability to stuff it in a backpack when carrying a larger rifle for prairie dogs or take it along ice fishing for an occasional predator moving on the shore line. It’s a 200 yard varmint gun that would always be shot seated and up, prone isn’t a big deal but real estate in my pack, or sled is. It’s also my rifle that’s always ready for predators or vermin in the yard, would be nice to make it nice and small so It can be easily concealed when we have company. I think it would be neat. I almost snapped for an element for it on the Black Friday sale but ended up using a take off stock.

Do you think an atom is too short for a 22” barrel?

That is a hard question... We came out with the ATOM for those wanting to build bolt action pistols or SBR's. For a 700 short action, it can accept down to a 5 3/4" length barrel. Where in comparison for an Element for a 700 short action the shortest barrel is Like 11 1/2".
**Minimum barrel length can vary depending on inlet so PLEASE check with us prior to making any decisions.
So when it comes to barrel length it will really be personal? for most unless they are going shorter than the minimum length they would rather have the longer forend to get the bipod farther out and have more surface area to be used for multiple reasons.
But we have had many customers build on the ATOM and have a 26" length barrel and love it and the looks.
The ATOM depending on material and action inlet is only going to save you 1.5-2 ounces. All the weight in the chassis block is around the action inlet, not the forend. But hey as we all know saving ounces/grams is saving weight so to each its own.
We hope this helps with your decision. Attached is a picture of a 22" in an Element. Still, quite a bit sticking out. 8-19.jpg

What is the length of the barrel?
The overall length of the package folded down will all be determined by the barrel. So unless that barrel is shorter than 11 inches you would not be shortening the length at all. Just shortening the forend which wouldn't make it fit into a pack any better if it does not zip because of barrel length. Hope that makes sense but maybe you are building a 10 inch 17 HMR 🤷‍♂️

Thanks, do you have any pics of rifles in an atom you can post when you have time?

@cmahoney This first image has a Lone Peak short action with an element on top and ATOM on the bottom. This has a 20" proof barrel and is sitting a little far back from where it would drop into the Element, and the ATOM is shifted a decent way forward on the table. I will post two other images of Atom builds including a pistol build. 8-22.jpg

Makes sense. I think sbring it would be really cool but that’s not happening.
