Recently purchased a pair of SLC 8x42 binos after a side by side comparison with vortex razor HD and Kowa genesis prominar 44.
I realize that may not come as a surprise given the 500-600 dollar price hike over the three options, but I wanted to see if the extra coin invested actually netted a noticeable upgrade in performance and value. The following is my unscientific observation of the three.

First off I would like to thank eagle optics for allowing me the opportunity to purchase all three to review before purchasing. I found this guidance from their sales team to be the best form of customer service I have experienced in some time with a retailer.
Spending this kind of cash on gear without some sort of head to head trial was a risky venture to me, and after a couple days of email traffic with opinion questions they told me "why don't you see for yourself, and return what you don't want." Awesome!

I will spare the tech specs, as 5 minutes with Google can tell you all you need. Here it goes, from lowest to highest price.

Vortex Razor HD 8x42
Pros
-lowest price of the bunch
-warranty no questions asked replace/repair
-lightest of the bunch (noticeably)
-ergonomic/comfort level equal to swaro
-decent image quality (noticeable improvement over my then current leu Mohave)
Cons
-build quality/fit/finish seemed lacking for the price tag
-second largest fov negated due to outer 40% of image notably blurry

Note: in terms of build quality I was nitpicking but it looked like they were painted by some guy with a rattle can. It Has absolutely nothing to due with performance. I just remember thinking it was odd given the fact you're spending 1k +.
Image quality in the center was on par with the other two with regard to resolution. Tie with Kowa for brightness. Muted color rendering compared to the others. My gripe that knocked these out is while the fov was only 20 feet off swaro per the spec sheet, and you could just barely tell a difference in normal distance viewing, the sweet spot was only 50-60 % of the fov. This didn't deem the rest of it useless, but it was noticeable.

Kowa Genesis 8.5x44 Prominar
Pro
-build a quality, build quality, build quality!
-image quality in sweet spot
-truly HD color render

Con
-soda straw fov
-eye cups so uncomfortable I got tired of looking through them
-heaviest of the bunch
-chincy diopitor adjustment
-rolling ball effect ( I could get past it)

Notes: I really wanted these to be my next binos. I own an 883 FL glass spotter and that's what was in my head when I ordered these. I HATED the eye cups on these binos. Front porch testing was enough to wear me out, I could only imagine a day of actively seeking out game. Lacking a bit as far as resolution compared to vortex and swaro, not much though. Wider sweet spot than razors but smaller fov, very noticeable. 2nd brightest of the group. An OMG color effect, everything just popped out at you with a lot of contrast. These things are bank vault, Swiss watch built with the exception of the afterthought diopiter adjustment. The weight is noticeable but a non issue for me and gave a feeling of robustness. A couple small tweaks and these would knock off some bigger names.

Swaro SLC 8x42
Pro
-FOV biggest of the bunch
-turn the spotlight on bright
-build quality
-reputation
-ergonomics/viewing comfort

Con
-bueller???
-idk the thumb indents don't fit my hand placement

Notes
I did not want to buy these to be honest. I didn't believe the price difference would net any big gains in performance. I've been wrong a couple times though. These went an extra 10 minutes over the other two reading a community sign with small print at 100-125 yds. Huge fov. Great color, on the heels of Kowa. Resolution at least equal to the rest , probably a touch better. Largest sweet spot 85% or better to my eyes, big enough I had to look at the edge to find it. I could look through these all day in comfort from an ergonomic standpoint and image/eye strain consideration. I have always thought of swaro owners as snobs with too much money and not enough sense. As it turns out they knew something I didn't. Looking forward to not replacing these for decades.

On me
I am 32. I have 20/15 PRK corrected vision. My experience with high end glass up til now has been my Kowa spotter and my NF NXS riflescope. These binos were reviewed over a 7-10 day span, observing wildlife in an unscientific setting. I looked at some res charts with them but didn't note any appreciable differences, most likely due to my lack of experience in the matter. Thanks for reading

Sounds like you did your homework, thanks for the write-up. After owning much of the top glass I have settled on swaro for my binos and spotter... they leave me wanting for nothing else. Enjoy your new toy I'm sure you'll be happy.!

right, i cried once a while back and the only thing i regret is getting a straight tube instead of the angled tube.

Did you notice any eye strain in the two lesser brands?

Hand painted Razors? are you talking the rubber body or where exactly?

Not really, Kowas seemed like the eye relief wasn't as forgiving. I was constantly fighting shadowing in the center of the image and edges. I'm Not sure if the issues I was having with the eye cups was causing this or it was an optical fault of the eye box not being very generous.

I'm not sure if it was powder coat or what, but there was a "finish" on part of them that looked like it was applied with a spray. If memory serves I believe it was on the hinge near the focus adj. It was bubbled/globbed on one place. Like I said, a non issue performance wise, just an observation. This was not the rubber armor.

Beachbunny, for my uses I like an angled spotter as well

That razor must of been missed by the QC people. Everything I have bought from Vortex has had a very nice finish. That is cool that eagle optics (believe they own vortex) let you test them out.

Thanks for the review. Everything I've owned or had the opportunity to look through by Swarovski has impressed me and I'm soon going to have all Swarovski optics. I've got their scopes on my rifles and an ATS HD 80 spotter now and my next purchase will be binoculars.

Yeah that was by no means a stab at vortex. I wouldn't have even worried with it if I had kept them. Just a simple observation.

I would like to see how the SLC stacks up against the vaunted EL series for curiousity sake, and to see if there is a point of diminishing return on your investment.

I'm at the limit of what I'm willing to spend. The SLC is more than I could ask for, and hopefully the last bino that I buy.

I will say this I would not feel shortchanged with the vortex in the woods. Kowa on the other hand has a little ways to go. They may be the 80% solution in my eyes.

View attachment 27944Hillbilly, I wonder if the Zeiss 8X42 HD Conquest at a demo price would have scorred well. I do love the Swaro SLC's and the 8X would be my choice. Could not find a deal on these that satisfied me. Ended up with the 8X45 FL T RF (demo) within $150 of the best price of the SLC's!
I know what you mean about such a purchase with little comparison. It worked out as I could not be more pleased with my purchase at this point. I got the full transferable warrenty (this was was an issue when I looked at the fine Leica glass) and they fit my hands well. No problem with the eye cups, diopiter ajustment is well done/tight, and I can operate the RF feature with one hand! I will get used to the weight assisted by a quality harness (pic attached) Great job on your comparison. LaGriz

Best thing about taking the Swaro plunge is that now I quit wasting time reading optics reviews.

i literally flipped a coin..Swavo or Leica..

i think the Swavo has a better edge clarity..right at the edges..but other than that..there is no substitute for great binos.

my next pair will be Swavo..my Leica are a bit on the huge side.

Welcome to the black hole. My hunting partner and I go back and forth on this every trip, I have els, he has slc hds. I can see texture better in the 12x50 els than I can in the 15x56slc hds, in the 10s, it's more of a wash then we're into 10% of edge clarity. I think colors are better in the els, but the slchds are brighter.

That's the jist of the what I have read. I would just like to see it in person. The edge I can live with given the large fov, I find it hard to even look to the edge to study it. I would find it hard to give up the brightness of the SLC. Property sits between two steep ridges with most of the area not getting any sun until noonish and quickly gone again by early afternoon. That and available cover equals th need for the brightest glass I can get. This has become painfully obvious with my old 10x mojaves. Looked right past many an animal

This may be a newb ? but what's bueller? I too recently just took the plunge on some Swaro slc's but I opted for the 10x, I hadn't compared them side x side with the el's but the ergonomics of the slc was what sold me without the need for a side x side test. Great read by the way, nice reading a review I can understand! 😜

I'm not a video link guy but maybe we have a Simone here to give you the low down :) . It's a reference to Ferris Bueller's Day Off movie. Specifically Ben Stein calling roll.

Just watched the clip on youtube, I get it now lol! :D Thanks for that! :o
