Careers in outdoor industry

As elsewhere in this thread, be specific or at least explore options, then get specific. Don't be a jackwagon!!

Know who you are and what you can do.

Probably the best advice in this thread. I often dream about having a job with XYZ company but know that the business and management world isn’t for me. Until someone wants to hire a nurse/medic to tag along while they hunt and pay me what I make now then I will stay where I’m at because I really love what I do and I’m damn good at it. I love hunting but it’s not my career (definitely not the great white hunter) and wouldn’t want to ruin my love of the out doors by making it a career.

Friend of mine has a career in the outdoor industry. Retired from CPW and now works the sporting goods counter at Walmart

Sorry man, couldn’t resist. Hope you find some answers. I had a guide operation at one time and dealt with a few industry pros. A lot of the sales rep folks do OK, most of them hustle photos or articles to get by though. And nearly all of them are looking for the next freebie. Lots of egos and not much money. I’d imagine the corporate level would be the place to go to make a decent living.

I’ve been working in the natural resource industry for 22 years and own a growing company that supports private and public entities in several states.

Agree with some of the suggestions above - education/training is a big one. Even more important is attitude and aptitude. Flexibility to do different things and go anywhere.

Even master’s degrees are a dime a dozen and my experience with the latest crop of PhDs is they spent too much time on mom and dad’s tab pontificating issues that are too complex for the rest of us. All of a sudden the guy or gal that can roll up their sleeves and keep their head down for 60 hrs/week is back in style.

PM if you’d like any suggestions.

Did well locally w archery competition and had killed a pile of critters w a bow. New start up bow mfg wanted me to shoot for them, which turned into me developing a factory staff program, which turned into me managing dealers, marketing and prod development. I did that for 10 years and then we sold the company.
