Career Goals - Hunt Every Day in September

Four years ago I was 12 minutes late taking a COVID test at work (I'm one of those dirty unvaccinated types). They suspended me for the following week. It was third week July and I knew the Wyoming cutties were eating hoppers...didn't have to tell me twice the take the week off!

I took a job several years ago. When I got there one of my guys had just been suspended for two weeks for accessing porn on a government computer. I started in early summer and had zero vacation built up. I said to my boss "So.......this 2-week mandatory suspension thing.......do we get to pick when that actually happens, or do I just wait until September to look at porn"?

I work for a fairly large trucking company as a company driver not owner operator. I get "three weeks" 50hr/45hr/45hr of PTO. Though they will gladly give you a week off without pay as freight is slow right now.

I work as a financial advisor and run my own business. However I feel like everyone thinks oh you run your own business you can take as much off as you want. It is not quit that easy. I do however have an assistant to take care of client needs while I’m away. I also have three business partners that help if need be while I’m away. I’ve never left for more than two weeks as too much build up and never want a unsatisfied client. It is great having flexibility and doing what I want, but it’s still no free for all. I will say it is very nice not having to deal with what I’ve seen in some of these comments. Running a buisness however isn’t all what it’s hyped up to be let me tell you. I’m more than happy with my spring and fall trips out west.

I’m in a similar situation. Work a corp job, full time remote, compensated well, unlimited PTO but that doesn’t actually mean unlimited PTO. So can usually take long weekends with the occasional full week off

Just went the starlink route. Have a bunch of hunts lined up this fall and this will let me stay connected while taking advantage of working remote.

Wish there was an other option, but I missed the boat on marrying a sugar momma and have 2 crotch gremlins at home that need a roof over there head.

Some people have career goals to make a ton money or climb the corporate ladder. Personally, I want to eventually spend the entire month of September in the mountains chasing elk.

I have a great corporate job right now. I work remote, well compensated, and get plenty of time off. Right now, I can take two consecutive weeks off to travel west and elk hunt. But being in a management role, I’m still bombarded with emails and phone calls.

I’ve thought of going the Starlink route and working remote from camp. But I take my job seriously and feel convicted about taking advantage of the remote work.

I see a bunch of guys on here talking about heading west for 4 weeks or even longer. Is everyone doing that self employed? Work on a contract basis? Or just retired?

Just curious what career paths allow you to maximize your time in the mountains.

I work on the ocean and it’s very well known that I lay myself off in September, it’s always been that way. I grind all summer working every day, and bail for bow season

I work in oilfield, 20 days at work and 10 days off. With my 10 days off and 2 weeks vacation I can take close to an entire month off.

I work in the oilfield also. I’m taking 2 10 days hunts off in September with my wife. I told my boss 6 months in advance. If they can’t get a plan to cover me with 6 months notice then I want a raise.

I’ve walked away from a couple of jobs because of vacation time disputes. I work my ass off daily, but my time is my time. My family deserves that as much as I do.

That's exactly right. I tell my boss I won't be here, not asking, this is a heads up so figure it out. My bosses are pretty cool about it though. Years ago my dad told his boss I won't be here from this day to this day months in advance. The day came he left to go hunting, my mom got a phone call asking where larry was, she was like well he's up hunting like he told y'all months ago. He was like well we need him at work and she was like well you're SOL because he's up in the mountains for 9 days . When he got back he got bitches at and that was his last day working there. What you do in the oilfield? I'm a frac hand

I own small construction business very fortunate to have great group of guys to hold
It down when I’m gone usually 8-10 weeks a year for Hunting unfortunately with what I do leaving any during spring is nearly impossible, so 15 day spring brown bear Hunt prolly not in cards anytime

We design, manufacture, and rent drill bits for all the rigs. I work for Ulterra Drilling Technologies

I'm an a&p mechanic in the aviation industry. Contractor position at part 145 repair station. It's written in the contract to take a continuous unpaid month off per year for per diem purposes. Hunting the entire month of September is my lifestyle.

Ever since I was 18 I had always taken the entire season to hunt no matter which season I was hunting, I figured, take advantage of my youth and do it now rather than when I'm old and retired. I did it many times without pay and worked hard to make up for it the rest of the year. It's really a personal choice. Now I have the best job that I am contracted for 4 months (April-July) and earn a year round salary, so even my time off I'm getting a paycheck every 2 weeks. It opens my fall for when I'm guiding and hunt when I want.
