Car Audio Nerds - Show Me What You Got

Not joking but here is my baby. Haven't connected anything yet but very retro 80's for sure. Will eventually pair it with a hidden USB/BT converter with a small amp. As I didn't want to damage the factory speaker holes I went with a mid priced pair of Sony 6.5" round speakers. Shit the exhaust is so loud I can't hear it anyway....lol. That is changing too. Had to make a custom package tray and we 3d printed the faceplate and the speaker covers which have an AMX logo embossed on them. I do have a deep scratch on the display, but while not NOS, every part the unit came with was in the box, down to all the mounting screws and hardware. Even the original box and owners manuals and warranty card. Still trying to figure out spots for front speakers. Not many spots in a Javelin.

I just listen to podcasts in my daily so no need for anything special.

I would guess the new cheapo touchscreen radio and same old factory speakers in the '99 F-350 don't count for much in this thread......

Nah we'll count it for sure!

Interior is sweet! What material did you use for the headunit adapter? I'd be scared of PLA. At least in the heat we get here.

It is PLA, but we finally figured out ABS. It's a garage queen and only gets driven on bluebird days so PLA is fine for now. We will see how it holds up. I have a new printer I need to set up that can run some of the more industrial materials that are way more heat tolerant. May dabble in that too but at $125 per roll it's up there. My son also reverse engineered all of the AC vents. The originals were kind of fragile. Still need to print final copies of those up as well.

What's the setup going to be? Looks like a truck for sure. How'd that mat do? I was planning on using the same.
Kenwood Excellon double DIN
JBL Components in the front doors
JBL coaxial rear fills
Rockford Fosgate shallow 10"
Pioneer 5 channel amp

It's still apart, but I'll let you know how this part works...

120mil butyl/foil on the floor, 80mil on the doors, back wall, and roof.
Siless 3in1 on the floor, back wall, and doors.
Siless 2in1 on the roof (their recommendation.)

Their chart for what a truck needs in terms of square feet seems low... I'm going to have to order more to get the doors done.

I'm also installing (mounting, hard wiring, and plumbing) an air compressor and 1000w pure sine wave invertor at the same time.

Truck is a 2012 King Ranch, the headrests are already wrapped in cowhide, the sub box will be too.

What are your thoughts on their system with the normal butyl mat and their 2 stage mat? Is the two stage worthwhile?

Seems like it.

Probably won't have it all back together until Sunday at the earliest. Currently routing wires. Second layer for the roof shows up this afternoon.

Kinda looking for a cheap Pendleton blanket for the headliner...

Roof is done, but here's a progress picture.

After doing 120mil, the 80mil seems thin!

Keep us posted. Looks like your balls deep in that thing! It'll be worth the effort though, you're doing it the right way. Did your king ranch not come with the AC plug in? I had a 2013 that had that on the back side of the console. I thought I'd use it more than I did but it didn't get much love on that truck or my Chevy that just dropped a lifter.

I just ordered $300 worth of 0g power and ground wire, 200' of speaker wire, and all of the fuse blocks for my ride.

At first I was not looking forward to routing all new wires to get around all of the weird signal shit they did in the OEM setup but now after looking at your post, I forgot how much of a pain in the ass the sound deadening is. But honestly, it's one of the most important parts.

Ordered my Morel Sensus 3 way set and a cheap set of Morel Maximo coax 6.5"s for the rear along the factory harness adapter to give me my high level inputs. Other than random little stuff and my sound deadening, I'm there.

I'll start chipping away at routing speaker wires and little stuff until I can get a weekend to dedicate to ripping the truck apart. Only thing I have left to figure out is how I want to mount my amps on the rear wall.

It does have it, and I use it some. But it won't run my M18 battery chargers. This one won't be used much, but occasionally it will be very handy.

Yeah, doing the sound deadening take so much time, but it's definitely worth it to do it. Plus you can clean it all so well while it's out.

I'm trying to do it right, not that much harder, and it's not all coming back out! If I decide to upgrade speakers, popping off door panels is easy.

Your's should sound great! Hopefully I have a review of the Siless stuff soon.

I didn't drive much today, but even with the back seat still out, it's drastically quieter.

I didn't drive this truck with just the butyl/foil layer, but it's so much more of a difference than the last truck that didn't get the second layer.

Man this thread brings back memories. I can't show it to you, but what I got is tinnitus and a frustrated wife that I can attribute, in part, to my car stereo days. My last system in an extra-cab toyota pickup 22-ish years ago was two 15" JL Audio W3 woofers on a PG 600W amp, 5 1/4" alpines w/tweets in the doors and a RF 300W amp for those, 1 Farad capacitor to help with voltage drop, Kenwood head unit, dynamat all around. My buddies and I made the box for the subs from MDF. Good times, but I probably should have invested all that money. Haha!

Looks great! I'm starting mine tomorrow with wiring up the harness to get inputs for my amp and running all of my power and ground to distribution blocks. The running 8 sets of speaker wire through the truck. After that I'll start deadening the front doors.

I'll be using the siless max, hybrid, and the foam on top so very similar to what you have. If I have time I'll rip out the back seats and get the underseat tub out so I can start glassing in my box. I've been reading up on fiberglass all week and different techniques. Ready to get it going.

Hopefully my speakers come in next week and it's just a plug and play situation.

Nice! Your speaker setup is definitely more ambitious. Old school components with crossovers in the doors is a good bit easier.

My wife rode in it and said she'd continue to make fun of me, but it was definitely a lot quieter.

Years ago I went all out on mobile audio systems. Full DSP, 2 or 3 way active fronts, 2x12" SQL substage, full mat layers etc. I've toned it way back on the last couple.

Most recent is my '16 F150. I wanted it to be simple low budget, plug and play, and look completely factory and cooperate with factory Sync head unit and all factory electronics seamlessly. Which meant playing friendly with the engine start/stop voltage drops, which at the time only the Kicker Key amplifiers could do.

I installed the Key 180.4 hidden behind the dash and run Hertz components active in the factory door/pillar locations.

For the sub stage, I didn't want to give up under-seat storage so it had to go behind the rear seat in a tight spot. I used the Alpine type-S 8" with the Key 500.1. Underhung motor, shallow, and modeled beautifully in winISD at .65cu ft net tuned to 35hz with a 27" slot port for no port noise. I had to get creative on the enclosure but it turned out alright. Impressive low frequency extension and plenty of output for this simple setup.

The Key auto-DSP is just OK. I miss having full control over entire EQ/DSP, but the auto-TA works well to get a solid center image and for the little amount invested it sounds clean enough.

Back when I was half as old. I had a 89' 150 regular cab. That I had built 2 boxes with 12" Rockford Fosgate and Kenwood 6x9 3ways on the side. The boxes fit behind the seat with the 10 disc changer. Had 3 amps and a MTX equalizer under the seat. Rockford Fosgate 6" matched components in the doors and 2" tweeters on the A pillar.

That thing gave back massages

The 12" eventually moved to another project car that I sold and the speaker box sat around a while till I sold it to a guy in the neighborhood with the same car I had
