I've always been interested in Capercaille since Minnesota made a half-assed attempt at transplanting Capercaille in Northern Minnesota.

Do you take them with a rifle or shotgun?...... Weight of a bird like that?

Nice.....very nice!

Thank You Fredrik

Fredrik,

Do you use dogs for capercaille hunting?
No Vern, i dont use dog in the hunt in winter,
Usually i just ski hotspots, During fall hunts i try to remember where finding pile of shit under pines, they often eat from same threes, probably tastyer pine needles or maby better sight?
I use wooden skis, its pretty hilly on my hunting spot, waxed with tar gives good balance between kick and glide.
Capercaillie is often found i Pine woods or pine fens, often alone or up to 2-3 individuals in a group.
We do hunt Black grouse in the same hunting season, but they ar found often in birch threes on open spots, typ a clear cut area.(witch we sorry to say has o lot of) they are way moore easy to scare away, but are more common, lives in groups up to 100 birds.

I use an rifle with really good precision with caliber 6.5x47Lapua or 222r if the weather its death calm.

Some hunters use dogs, mostly on fall hunt, before the hens ar protected and the snow is not to deep.
They use posing or pointing dogs.

This is a bucket-list hunt for me. And the skis really seal it! Beautiful bird!

The birds flyes 300-800 meters if spooked, black grouse can fly even longer.

I Hunt moose and elk in my hunting area. Moose hunt is like an religion in Sweden
The skis are semimodern the black is carbonfiber where i have mend them after breaking them in an creek crossing. The ice did not hold...

We do have bear and Lynx Lynx, No wolves are allowed due to Samis and there reindeers.

Thanks Fredrik
