I am going to take a taxidermy school in the spring and I got a Mule deer buck yesterday I am wanting to mount in school. I have emailed the school for cape care but I was wondering if you anybody could give me some tips. The school is obviously not open again until monday at the earliest. I have it caped out to the head right now with meat side to meat side in a walk in cooler. Any help would be great don't want to screw it up.

If you know how to remove the cape from the head, do that and double bag the cape and freeze it skin side out. If you don't know how to remove the cape, freeze the hole head bagged if possible to keep the hide from drying out and freezer burning. Treat it the same as you would meat you would eat months later.

If you know how to remove the head, turn the ears, lips, nose, and flesh it, then salt it and let it dry and it will last for years.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Thanks Steve I have another smaller buck I am going to practice removing the hide from the skull and then I will do the buck I am mounting and store it as you said until the school gets back to me.

We produced a Wilderness Taxidermy video some years back, which is a 3-disc set that covers how to field prep (cape) ungulates and bear. Disc 2 shows the entire process of caping and head care as well as fleshing on a caribou. Lots of close ups and instruction on facial details, too.

Might check it out if you want some serious professional tips.
