I picked up a Proof Elevation MTR in .223 with a 16.5" barrel. It has an 8 twist barrel and will run supressed. Purpose of the rifle will be paper and steel with occasional coyotes. So I'm wondering if it will benefit from a re-chamber to Ackley Improved. I plan on shooting either Sierra 69 or 77 gr match kings.

I love my 223AI with a 1:7 twist, but it was a fresh blank that i had chambered and not punching the existing chamber. However, I do love not having to trim brass regularly with the AI and the velocity bump allowed me to cut it back to 18". My pet load is 88gr ELDMs at 2630fps, which performs well out to 900m. If you dont mind spending the money and also fireforming brass, the AI is good little performance boost.

If .223 brass was expensive, then yeah, it's worthwhile. But since it's essentially free, trimming is a non issue & the little bit of extra zip you get, to me, really isn't worth the expense of a set-back & re-chamber.

I've been kicking around getting an AR barrel chambered in .223 AI. The appeal is that, from everything I can tell, it's like adding 3-4 inches of barrel length in velocity. I would very much like to get 18" velocities out of a 14" barrel, esp for suppressed setups.
