Whats everyone's thoughts on the border being open during main hunting season? have they issued non-res tags?

I am supposed to be guiding in BC this season and am a bit hesitant to book flights etc.

certainly ****** our season here(NZ), borders been shut and ruined our entire guiding season

Right now all nonessential travel is prohibited. Which means my fishing trip for walleyes is most likely canceled.

BC declared hunting and fishing essential a week or two ago. Parks are opening for camping June 1. As per the border, that is still wait and see but we are heading the right direction with fairly minimal deaths...126 as of yesterday. Hopefully we are open before the August sheep season.

I wonder if hunting and fishing for non-res are considered essential? I'm thinking not. Considering the government is telling us to hunt near home I'm not optimistic about sheep season for non-res. The talk of our government is that this summer there will not be international travel "stay in your neighborhood this summer" is what we've been told.

Also, the two-week quarantine will still be on for international travelers so how will that work for hunters?

I really really hope I am wrong but looking at the government's reopening phases tells me we are going to have weird restrictions for the next year.

I hope that the Provincial Health Officer changes the “hunt locally” rule.

I have a month long hunt scheduled for BC in September. As much as I would like to be optimistic I feel reality is that non residents may not see Canada this year. I feel Canada’s perception of the United States is our situation is more severe than that of Canada’s. Rightfully so the numbers are there to prove it. I feel like we are going to see 30 border closures renewed every month beyond hunting season. It’s a shame though the amount of revenue generated by sportsman is significant and to me Canada and the US would be crushing businesses that mean so much to both sides of the border.

I think the one question that is weighing on my mind is how will outfitters handle it. Especially larger caliber hunts such as sheep hunts etc. Travel insurance is not covering the borders being closed. These outfitters would be losing substantially as well as the hunters that invest the time money and physical preparation required for these hunts.

I’m worried as I have a Alberta mule/whitetail hunt in November. I have a sinking suspicion that this whole season is going to be a loss for both the hunter and Canadian outfitter. I don’t see Canada opening up their border to a influx of Americans unless things take a dramatic turn for the better. The Canadian government has already said that they will not change their restrictions until a vaccine is available.

I live in Texas and also hold a lifetime Kansas license and got plan B in effect to go to Western Kansas for whitetail and hopefully will draw a mule deer tag too if Canada falls through.

If Canada closes the border for the entire fall I feel like they are crushing a vital industry in their country.

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but Im friends will several guides & outfitters for deer, sheep, bear etc and most think it will be 50-50 odds of even the deer season happening. Below is the article about Trudeau’s stance re Covid.

Do you think non resident hunters in the states need to worry?!

I just read an article including Canada’s phased plan to reopen the country. If it follows the timeline listed then fishing season and hunting season is all but a bust. In BC alone where I am headed they have a 4 phase reopening plan. Phase 3 is slotted from June until September. Not until phase 4 can international tourism recommence and there is no listed timeline for that. Pretty sure we can all bet on being home this year. I hope plan b in the states is even a possibility.

Isn't that Trudeau statement a month old?
Regardless, may well be true and is accurate if the 'phased plan' sticks.

Yes it’s a month old but it speaks to his intentions. Tough thing to swallow when so much money and effort are put in to these trips

Will be interesting to see, I am supposed to go to Sask for a waterfowl trip 10/1 ish....

Waterfowl is far cheaper than a sheep hunt, but I am still rearing to go....

Particularly painful if you have a cabin up there.😢

Edit:Should add that it's Canada's decision on these issues of course and I respect that.Forever thankful to them for allowing me to share their natural resources. Many of the best times of my life, whether hunting, fishing, hiking or whatever have been there.I hope our governments work together and that 'rifts' do not develop over this.I fear long term business/economic issues over this and hope I'm wrong.

Good luck guys. I hope you guys can go on your hunts. I know our Spring Bear Outfitters are gonna take a good loss of revenue.

hmm Thanks for your input guys, going to be slow year for most business.

Our country is looking at mass employment, tourism has been one of our main earners and thats well and truly a write off for the this year.

We can only hope for the best and wait and see I guess. Some countries(like ours and Canada) approach to locki ng down everything 'until there is a vaccine' is a very short sighted plan. We have no plan to exit lockdown and thats the scary thing. Its very easy to shut everything down, but much harder to re start it
