Good evening everyone and Merry Christmas - I hope you all enjoyed the day w family (yes even the ones nobody wants to invite).

I am a new member to the forum and this is my first post. I have clicked through Rokslide before when looking for information and I appreciate the amount of experience some of you have and the knowledge you have shared. Short background: I am 28, based out of Houston, and like to think I’m decent at archery hunting.

To my main point; I am interested in a Moose hunt in Canada within the next year or two, and I am looking for outfitter recommendations. I utilized the search function and did not find any current posts on this subject - hence the new thread. Any recommendations? Things you wish you would have known before your first Moose hunt? Etc?

I would like to stay somewhere between 10 and 15k. Lower on that spectrum is preferred however there’s some wiggle room. Alaska is on my list however I just got engaged and paying for a wedding takes precedent over a trip like that. (I always thought hunting was expensive - women are a whole different level!)

Thanks for your time,

Word of advise. Spend money before kids. It is amazing how much they cost. I wouldnt bat an eye before kids at a mountain goat hunt and now after two it has gotten hard. I did just did my first moose hunt in Newfoundland in 2024 and came out with a dandy. Just make it known to your wife that is something that is a priority in your life and make your sacrifices to make your hunts happen.

Your budget is on the light side for a giuded hunt in Alaska unfortunately. Try contacting a hunt broker. They work with tons of outfitters and can help you out. Usually they vet the outfitters they work with pretty well, but still ask for references. As stated above gwt out and do it while you can. You will probably be able to find something that interests you in that price range.

I'd narrow down where you want to go, what your expectation is.

A moose hunt in the Yukon or Peace is going to be different than the Shield is going to be different than The Rock...

Big country and wide distribution of animals.

So far all I’ve really got is;
a) Do NOT want to just drive around in trucks and/or atvs - want to get out on foot for at least a few miles a day.
b) Archery is preferred however I could be convinced to use a rifle.
c) In my perfect world - would like to be in a region where a 40-50” bull is possible.

As long as the food is good and the people are fun to talk to and knowledgeable, I do not really care too much about accommodations and all the “fluff”. I’m fine sleeping under the stars if needed.

I am indifferent in terms of Geography. Houston more or less splits Canada in half in terms of longitude. It is just as easy to go east as it is west. BC and Alberta look interesting from what I have read and seen online - but have no on the ground experience.

Your budget is fine. High success rate moose hunts can be found in Canada in this price range. I’d think Newfoundland and Alberta would head the list. Scroll down to the bottom of your thread for some related ones. Unguided Alaskan hunts can also be had in your price range. If using a bow, be sure to get rut dates. Specific hunting tactics vary, so ask ahead of time. Checking references helps, but personal recommendations trump that by a mile.

Many of the folks on here have found their outfitters and transporters through long searching and may not offer that specific info. Good luck to you. Moose hunting is a great adventure.

Congratulations on your engagement, btw. My wife has been on several moose hunts with me. She’s helped cut and pack moose and she’s stared down a brown bear over rifle sights. Pretty impressive I’d say, for a Sunday School teacher.

Get your checkbook out. But definitely some giant bulls and a wonderful outfitter you’ll be hunting with.

I don't have any experience with an outfitter but when I was looking at hunts in BC these are a few I found that should be in your price range. This was a few years ago but most were around $12K then.

Nanika Lake Outfitters
Robson Valley Outfitters
Moose Valley Outfitter
Little Dease Ventures
Love Bros & Lee

A couple Alberta outfitters I saw that got good reviews.

Bowen Lake
Misty River

There are threads in the moose forum that you can find with people recently posting about Alberta moose.
