I have a few hundred dollars worth of duck and speck calls but I’m going honker hunting and need to figure out how to make a honk. What’s a good beginner call? The cheaper the better!

I my group we have drc, molt gear , foiles and grounds. I like my drc life sentence for the big honkers up here . My buddies blows his ground half breed really well. Non of those are really cheap. My kid bought a pacific 509 and he likes that one. Cheap you could just get a bigger river flute if you’re hunting big geese. If you’re hunting the little ones I don’t think that would be a good fit. Haven’t really heard any of the cheap ones that can get fast enough or sound that good for lessers.

My buddy just bought a cheap Buck Gardner. I played with it a bit and might grab one myself.

Cheaper than that? Just get a decent flag

Depending upon location, you can use the human voice and say “get off my lawn”or use your car horn-that seems to have them gather in mass right in front of you

My advice would be to buy one on sale from a reputable call maker (don’t matter which) and keep working on that one til you can really make it sing. Then go somewhere that has a bunch you can try out and find what fits your style the best. And when the time comes to hunt, leave your call at home. I’m only half kidding there. I find that 99% of the time the best way to kill geese is by being quiet.

I haven't used it in many many years but way back I used a Haydel's Honker call. I thought it was pretty easy to learn on and make all the proper noises and it seemed to work. What say you all? Is that one still a viable call?
