Okay, please excuse my ignorance but this is the first time I am entering the draw. Is it wise to enter draw in two states? If I'm reading this right, if I don't draw I'm just out the application fee. I am thinking I can raise my odds if I go with a public land guide. We went on a late season drop camp OTC hunt in Colorado without even a sighting and my son and I still consider it our best hunt ever. thanks

Thanks for the replies already. windgypsy, very informative. I see that the deadline for Wyoming is jan 31st and new Mexico it's March 22nd. Enter Wyoming and if no draw then enter New Mexico? thanks

Is it correct that you need a guide if you're a non-resident hunting public land?

Thanks! I was misinformed before... I just found a map on WGFD website that shows all the areas a guide is required.

Another common misconception among new draw applicants is that they shouldn't apply for too many draws to avoid "drawing 2 really good tags in the same year." While I suppose this is theoretically possible, it is pretty rare. Once you get up high enough with points for most states, you at least have a good idea when you might draw a good tag. You can plan accordingly. It is really rare that you are randomly drawn for 2 good tags in the same year. Bottom line is that you should apply for all the states you might possibly ever want to hunt elk in. Some states take years of applying to get a good tag, some are much sooner. Good luck!

Gohunt.com is great for showing draw odds. Wyoming's general elk tag will take at least 2 points most years. If you don't draw a tag, hunt on an over the counter tag in Idaho or Colorado. get the experience on the otc tags while building points for a draw tag. Good luck!
