any of the Rocky Mtn or Phelps (or any other brand) reeds with the softer latex are good calls to start on. Mellow Yellow is what I started with but you'll learn quickly so get some of the more advance calls too.

I've always struggled with even making a noise with mouth calls particularly turkey mouth calls so I didn't think I'd be able to use an elk call. But I got the born and raised variety pack of elk calls, which I believe is made by phelps, and I was able to use/learn on them quickly. good variety of thick and thin latex calls

Different calls work well for different people. I like to use the Phelps red one (I forget the name), but it does good herd bulls, but you can also get some good cow chirps from it. As a beginner that one worked well for me.

I cant use a diaphram call either. That is why I use the EZ Bugler Phelps bugle. I carry a few extra reeds and mouthpieces with me in case one fails. Well worth the money.
