To me as a mn hunter this seems like a silly question. Because when scouting here you want to leave as small as a footprint as possible. As well as most game if you get busted calling will associate the call with humans. I will be in Colorado two days before bow opener to scout and from what I hear elk are not overally vocal this time of year. So would it pay to hit some calls to help locate the elk? Or go in and out like I normally would . Thanks

You may try calling sparingly(hint:hardly at all) on a ridge to locate if there is absolutely no chance of an Elk scenting you but personally I would probably wait until I had a bow in my hand, that's just me.
All Elk have a unique call and if any Elk associates your bugle with a human they will be gone by the opener!

If this was an area I was actually going to be hunting, I wouldn't be calling unless I had my bow in my hand, and it was legal time to start shooting.

However, I have gotten responses in early August while out scouting new areas.
