California proposed regulation changes

There is a petition that is being presented tomorrow to add draw hunt opportunities, modify unit boundaries, and expand hunt areas that I think is worth reading and considering. The area of largest benefit would be to combat point creep by spreading out applicants to more lower point draws.
Nothing proposed here is going to pull a max point applicant from Goodale or X5B, but I think there are some neat opportunities that are inline with other states management strategy. Any changes would likely be a couple years out but it’s the starting point of having the discussion with CDFW.
Feel free to take a read.

Thanks for posting. Some interesting things going on there. I hope some of them actually pass. Not sure about the changing archery/general rifle tag though.

The split general tag is going to be a tough sell for most, but I’m not opposed. If a guy wanted to hunt both seasons in the same zone, he could buy both tags. Plus I like the added week of archery at the end. I personally don’t see much use in the extended A zone “late” tags that would essentially be the first week of October. If they want to draw applicants to that, pushing that back to late October/Nov would make it much more desirable.

Got to say I like it when I actually see the government doing something good. Especially need to fix that grandma draw loophole. Wouldnt mind some late season opportunities too. Split tags wouldnt bother me, just get an AO plus a rifle tag. Hope they find something productive out of all this.

Definitely agree on the A zone late tags. At least make them middle of October if your only going to give out 15-35.
I hope the second bear tag passed also especially since the quota hasn’t filled for years now.

Nevada shut down the grandma draw rule this year, which I think is a great thing. Second bear tag is a big deal too, no chance in hell that we’ll ever get dogs back or have spring season but with the few guys who hunt bears hard, we may actually meet the quota for the first time since they banned hounds.

Been listening to the BLM rep presenting it on the Huntinainteasy podcast. Liking what I hear so far. Had no idea that the public was allowed to observe the meetings. Mike, the guy that runs that podcast, is really pushing to have hunters show up to the meetings (virtually) and at a minimum, state you're a CA hunter and that you are present and attentive to what the commission is doing. Apparently there are anti hunting reps at every single meeting. No reason why we can't do the same in some capacity.

All the proposals seem good to me. The one that stuck out was what they called the grandma rule. I never knew such a scam excited. How has that been legal this whole time. Its no wonder you see guys in premium zones year after year. 2 bears would be cool. The splitting up of some of the zones seems like a good move. Looks like they are also trying to address forest closures. Hopefully some of these atleast pass.

Just finished that podcast and found out about the "grandma rule." What a freakin scam. Can't blame a guy for taking advantage but yeah, that needs to go away.

I've never heard of that strategy either, guess those in the know kept their mouths shut.

I heard of the grandma rule when NV changed it. Apparently its abused really badly. Wonder how the draw odds would change if it was eliminated.

G41 will definitely be on my app if the season gets approved. Looks like the aspiring non resident tule elk hunter went from no chance in hell to, maybe, if your very lucky. Going from a potential bear hunting ban to the possibility of two tags getting issued was a shocker. Thanks to those posting the links.

Some of those late D zone muzzy tags have my attention. Coupled with the late archery extension a guy could hunt for 2 more weeks after rifle closes.

Will be interesting to see if the G41 gains any traction. If the dates were a few weeks later it would be even better.

Heads up Benicia duck hunters; the community is coming hard to eliminate hunting along the Benicia shoreline. Also, HSUS coming at bear hunting.
It’s ridiculous that bear hunting is even an issue in CA. There are so many bears in CA and humans are the only major predator of bears in CA.

Agreed. Not sure if you listened; the lady from the HSUS said there could be as few as 9800 bears in CA. I call bs on that. I listened to a podcast with a CA biologist and in his research, which is tough to do with bears, is likely 20000+, with 30k not out of the question.

I didn’t listen but I have heard before that CA bear population is over 20k easily and growing. I know my local area is out of control lately. Had no less than 10 different adult bears on cameras this year and one sow had triplets which I’d never seen before.
