Cabela's new price matching effort seems like an attempt to stay relevant-especially for club card holders..

I had not been in the large store here in KC for several weeks prior to yesterday.

Wow, how they have fallen. Rows of cheap Chinese kids clothes. very little hinting stuff in the grand scheme of things. Many bare shelves (obviously many retailers are struggling to keep inventory, but compared to their competition it was bad).

So much retail stuff missing that a large part of the store has a huge boat display inside.

Felt like Kmart meets the outdoor business.

Used to spend $50-80k annually with their credit cards. They changed who their credit card vendor was 2 or three times in the time I had a card. The last time they changed before the BP buyout I cancelled that damn thing immediately.

I requested a PM at Cabela's twice in the last few weeks and did get it, but both times they made a valiant effort to find a reason to reject it and they made it especially difficult to get the extra 5% off. For the second one, she even told me I had to pay with the Cabela's CC, then said I had to pay in part with it and finally said she would "make a one time exception as a courtesy" and "allow" me to pay with Cabela's giftcards. After I got off the phone I went back to their price match policy to review it again and found this:

2. If you are a CLUB Member, you must inform us of this and use your CLUB card, CLUB Points or gift cards to make the purchase for the additional 5% discount.

I used to be the Cabelas poster boy. These days I order from smaller specialized retailers Like Black Ovis and GoHunt. I have got a few things from Midway and Scheels the last few years. I guess I buy less gear these days but I focus on top notch quality.

I cancelled my club card the other day, actually they cancelled it for me because I hadn't used it in 2 years. I think I had like $23.00 in points, no offer of a gift card. I figured the bass pro acquisition would ruin a fine company and IMHO it did exactly that.

Moved all the camo off the store front, which is now full of Chinese made yuppie wear.

They won't last long at this rate.

I’m in the same boat as the rest of you…. What’s the best card to switch to and does switching affect your credit etc.

Banks won't usually convert a branded card to another card, but Capital One doesn't really have any great cashback cards anyway. On the guns and ammo front, the US Bank Cash+ used to be my go-to with 5% cashback at sporting goods stores. However, that recent push to have gun shops re-categorized so they could track gun purchases has removed nearly all of them from the sporting goods category. I ordered a bunch of stuff over the last 2 months from a half dozen shops and the only one that came up as sporting goods was some small ammo shop Outside of g&a, the cards I primarily use are Citi Double Cash (2% everywhere), Chase/Discover (for their rotating 5% categories + activated offers on Chase) and AmEx (for their activated offers). Your credit will get dinged for any new application, but it's usually only 10-12 pts and goes back up within 3 months.

I’ll never go back from scheels. Their customer service never fails and it’s just a great place to be in for a couple hours.

Price matching at Bass Pro (now Cabelas) has always been a PITA and their products are waaay overpriced. But I guess they need to offset the cost of the fish tank somehow.

Closing a 25 year old account, unless you have another account that is older or the same age, will ding your credit, but not by a lot. I would keep the Cabela's card I pay for a $5 item once a year to keep it active.

I let Capital One close my Cabelas’s Black card after 2 years of non-use and it had no impact on my credit.

They won’t last long? Hmm maybe you don’t know how long BP has been around lol. Not my cup of tea and probably not yours either, but someone apparently goes there because the one next to me is packed all the time

They know they will never really have to honor this because they are likely following the same MAP pricing as their "qualifying " competitors.

Dad tried to do this with rifles for my two younger brothers for christmas a couple years ago. Wanted to get them each a Tikka T3X in .270. Sportsman's Warehouse had one and Cabela's had one. Same model number and everything. Mouth breathers behind the counter at Cabela's argued with my dad and wouldn't do the price match because the Sportsman's that had the rifle in stock to price match was too far by distance. Basically, the one in Lehi Utah will only price match if it's within a certain radius distance. Per Google maps, the Sportsman's Warehouse with the gun in stock was outside that radius by about 3 miles, and they wouldn't honor it. So yes, they have the policy, but the number of hoops they'll jump through to NOT honor it is disgusting.

This was one of Cabelas ads that popped up in my FB feed a month or two back. Two hipsters that never looked more out of place than in the outdoors. He's wondering where the hell he can plug in the car and she knows there isn't chance in hell there's a vanilla mocha latte low soy, with a srinkle of cinamon within 20 miles.

Credit age is the only reason mine is still open. The Cabela's card is my oldest account, and at 32 all of my CC accounts are <10 years old.

I used to really like Cabela's and their store brand hunting clothes. Since the BPS buyout it's just gone downhill so much and seems to have become a lifestyle store instead of a hunting/fishing store. Abysmal inventory (even before all the supply chain challenges) and their prices on things like ammo and magazines have never really come down post-2013 AWB scare as far as I thought they should have. Sad to see.
