I'm looking at getting some new binos and wanting to spend in the 500-800 range. I'm looking for some input or advice. Here is what I'm thinking so far.

-Cabelas Euros- Love looking through them at the store. Enjoy how they feel. They seem a little heavy and I don't like that they don't have the unlimited warranty anymore. Can anybody tell me what they think of there's, or how the cabelas customer service is?

-Vortex Viper HD- I didn't really like looking through these as much as the euros. I liked them, just didn't feel like I loved them. Love the warranty, the price, and the idea though.

-Vortex Razor HD- I've read a lot about these, but haven't got a pair to look through.

Any input or suggestions I would appreciate. Even another recommendation. I'm thinking about just buying a pair from cabelas, using for thirty days, and then returning and trying a different pair until I find the right one. Is this looked down on?

Watch ebay. Theres some meoptas for 750 10x42. Also, look into the brunton icons or epoch md. The icons are cheap right now due to a name snafu by brunton but super nice glass. Definet difference between them and the vortex viper hd. That being said the vortex are super sweet as well but for the same price they are worth checking out.

I think the euros are easily competitive with the razor HD with the euro HD (AKA Meopta Meostar HD) being the best deal going. Cabelas still lists the euros as lifetime warranty. Meopta USA also has a lifetime warranty.

I have been running the Meostar HDs this year, and really enjoyed them. There is detailed info in my review on the main Rokslide optics page.

I had narrowed things earlier this year down to the Vortex Razor HD's and Meopta HD's in 10x42 and ended up getting the Razors. Cabelas carries both for comparison near where I live. I thought the Meopta's might be slightly clearer at distance, but no brighter or even a little less bright than the Razors, and no obvious increase in depth of field or edge to edge clarity (I have really hated the narrow depth of field and poor edge clarity in prior binoculars I've used). The Meoptas were heavier of course and don't have the Vortex warranty as mentioned above.

Prior binoculars used have included Bushnell, Nikons, and Zen Rays. The Meoptas are probably great, but with the Razors this is the first time I have been truly happy with a pair of binoculars. Using the Razors all day, especially on my light weight tripod, I get no eye strain and actually find animals :)

Oops, I guess the warranty is similar, sorry. If I ever get a pair of more expensive binoculars in the future, I will definitely compare them at dusk, and will bring a tripod to put them on for comparison. I have never done this, even when trying to compare the Razors and Euros/Meoptas, but I can really see where this would be helpful.

I have a pair of 8x42 razor hd for hunting and meopta razor hd 10x42 for archery range. Great optics on both I found the performance very similar. The meopta had better CA control, razor had a slight edge in sweet spot and brightness.

Some more reviews are here.

I see the cabelas euro has many more hd models than meopta too now. They are built like a tank.

Appreciate the info.

Yea the cabelas Euros has a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects, not the unlimited lifetime warranty. I guess this changed about a year ago.

The Meostar is essentially the same as the euros correct? Just different label, basically same glass?

MIKE7 - what nikon and and zen rays have you used prior to that you are comparing them too? I'm just curious.

Thanks guys!

If "no fault" warranty is a primary concern, Vortex is the way to go, although Meopta's customer service has an excellent reputation as well.

The Meostar HD and Cabelas Euro HD are identical optical designs, although Meopta has produced the "HD" models first in the Euro line, interestingly.

Used the Monarchs and Zen ED2's. i could not get the ed2s to center comfortably and so avoid seeing a really annoying halo around the periphery at dusk. with the razors i can comfotably peer around the entire field at dawn/dusk...and no halo.

I would def try the razors side by side with the euros before you buy. I went to cabelas and compared 3 times in two different stores and had an associate go with me outside to test them. The tried pushing the razors everytime but I thought the euros were better glass. Even had the employee admit it while we were looking at roadsigns outside and different signs inside the store where there was low light is some corners of the building. Also I bought the regular euros from the bargain cave for under 500 very happy with my decision.

I have a pair of Euros that are probably ten years old now and they have been great. I handed them to a buddy this summer while we were up camping and it was almost dark and he was amazed at how bright the view was through the binos. Definitely take them outside and compare. When I bought mine they let me take a pair of Swaros out and frankly weren't that much better. :-)

I have Meopta HD's (Cabelas Euro HD) and they are amazing. I have paired them with the Razor HD's and its a tough call. I like the feel and fit of the Razors more but the Meopta's I think have better glass.

The warranty for the Razors is unbeatable and that might play a big factor.

I had the Euros for about 2 years and went through 4 pairs of them. After they changed the warranty I traded them in while I could. All of my issues were with manufacture defects due to eye cup issues and white flakes trapped between the lenses. I really liked the glass in them, but they were heavy. If I was doing it all over again I would go with the Vortex Viper HD if I was in that price range. I think the glass is even and the warranty blows the Euro's away.

I compared the viper hd and the cabelas euros. I couldn't tell the difference in the optical performance during mid-day, including chromatic aberration. I purchased the non-hd Euros for ergonomics, etc... they are great. Things I have found I do not like; they are heavy, the hinge design makes them hard to hold one-handed, and the diopter wheel gets moved very often because of its location.

There are some meopta hd 10x42 for sale on archery talk for $750 and look like new.
