I was wondering where some of you fellow CA guys like to go backpacking during the off season? I'm saving up for a Kifaru pack and can't wait until I'm ready to order it so I can plan where to go on a trip. I'm hoping to have it ordered in the next month or two so its definitely going to be winter trip. I was thinking possibly the Marbles or somewhere I will be hunting next year, but its a serious haul just getting out there.

What time of year? You'll need to stay coastal unless you've got snow gear. Big Sur is a good place to hit up, anywhere in Los Padres Nat. forest.

I was not aware of an off season? LOL.

I find it good to backpack in areas I hunt or plan to hunt.

Marbles are not really accessible in winter...try a coastal area and maybe you find a spot you want to hunt.

The Kings Range on the lost coast in southern Humboldt Co. is all BLM, open to hunting and a nice place to backpack. You can go on the beach, up the trails (which there are lots of) or off trail. Since its BLM you can carry a gun and shoot any time of the year. You rarely have to deal with snow and then its so minimal its really not an issue. Rain, however, is. If you plan your trips you can get some great weather and the temps. usually don't get below freezing. As far as hunting, its steep and brushy except for the north end near Petrolia but there are bucks. Bears are in there when theres feed. I believe you said you were in Sonoma Co. so its probably under three hours to the south end.

Edit - This area is in deer zone B4 so it opens before most other zones except A. It also has a bad ass mountain biking trail area.

Actually a guy I had classes with in college who is getting his hunting license wanted to go out to the Kinds Range. One of our professors wrote a big piece of the management plan for the King Range BLM region. The thing is he wants to do it as primitive as possible and I want to use my stuff haha. He took a course with Cody Lundin and does a lot of survival primitive type trips himself.

I stomp around in the marbles almost all year around, but before long it'll be with xc skis and snowshoes.
