I have an XTR II 4-20x50 and a 5-25x50 on 6.5 CM rifles. The 5-25 has the SCR Mil reticle and the 4-20 has the Horus 59 reticle. I prefer the Horus 59 for dedicated long range target/PRS shooting but the CR Mil is a better all round hunting/long distance reticle. The XTR II models are good, track true, and the although the glass brightness is not up there with Zeiss and Swarovski and Meopta Meostar scopes obviously, the glass is better to my eyes that a lot of Vortex and Leupold scopes that cost double.
If you decide not to go with an XTR II, another scope under $1000 that I can recommend is a Japanese made Weaver Tactical 4-20x50 with a mil dot reticle and mil click turrets. I have one on a hunting/target rifle and it is a great scope that tracks well and has bright glass, probably a little brighter than the XTR II scopes.
I have used all three scopes to hit steel plates at 1100 yards mounted on a 6.5 CM. So any of the scopes should work for bench rest at the ranges you will be shooting a 308. The biggest thing will be picking a reticle that you like for what you will be doing with the rifle.
