I'm pumped! I drew 43 early rifle. Only took 7 points. ;). I have a spot picked out and hopefully it'll turn up a good buck. I've hunted in here some for elk but never for deer. I've put in as my second choice here for archery and never drew so this is my first chance in there for deer. I'm nervous because it took 7 points. I'm not going to hold out for a total monster (would be nice tho). Something respectable is all I want. Decent 4x4. 160-180 would be great in my book. I'm reluctant to say anything about the spot I have picked as I'll be in there during archery and the week before muzzleloader. Anyway, just excited and thought I'd share. If anyone has a line on a bruiser in 43 please don't hesitate to pm me. ;)

I've used it as a 2nd choice for 3 years and never drawn. Good luck to you. Maybe luckier than I.

Oh yea! Can't wait to hear about this hunt. Please take a video camera with satellite hook-up so we can watch it live!

Serious, a congrats on the tag. You can do 160-180 for sure on that hunt.

Chad44,
I also drew 43 early and so did one of my buddies from Carbondale. Lets keep in touch this fall, I plan on doing a ton of scouting. At the very least, We'll try to make sure we are not hunting the same basin.

Robby, I hope to get a lot of video. Not sure about the satellite uplink. ;).
Krueger,
I'm planning on scouting minimum 2 times hopefully 3-4 tho family time allowing it. We should def. get in touch. I've hunted elk in there and I've got one spot picked out that I've never set foot on. Google earth is all for my "new" spot to date. My elk spot doesn't seem to hold a lot of bucks. Must be a nursery valley. I have high hopes for my new spot tho. Looks good from a laptop but who knows. The sooner the snow is gone the better for me. PM me and I'll give you my cell.

aaaarrrrggg,
oh well, we'll just enjoy the video however you deliver.
Look for the big green and rocky mountains/basins- not too smooth, not too rocky to prevent good feed- in that country. Bucks can be on top if it's deer country but not so if it's just rocky/cliffy goat country.
I flew that country in a super cub in 2004- bucks everywhere bucks should be...

I drew it last year as my second choice archery hunt and hoping to do the same this year. Guess we'll see. If you want to bounce some ideas off of me I'd be happy to chat. It's big country and I don't think one person could cover it all! I'd be happy to let you in on some areas where we were in on deer. Didn't see any monsters, but saw a fair amount of deer last year.

Saw this thread on another site, might wanna wait a little bit before making your plans.
I called DOW today and got this answer. " The preference points statistics are not correct for 2013 because as of last thursday(may 9th) they approved a 25% cut in all Colorado deer tags across the board"

that was straight from the DOW's mouth. He said units that used to take 1 or 2 points will now take 4 or more because of fewer tags.

I inquired about our specific unit and he said tags were cut from 250 to 220 for 3rd season.

That is not 25% but still a cut. Making it even harder to draw.

No joke. I think I'm safe because I'm at the high end of points for there. Last year I believe some guys with 5 drew and everyon with 6 did. There was one or two guys with like 15 points that obviously drew. Hope I'm ok anyway. They already took my points so hopefully I don't get them back. ;). Bigeasy, thanks a lot. I am always open to listening.

There's actually some units where they increased tags so it's not all bad. Looks like we should have a solid chance at our second choice if number of applicants is similar to last year!
