Did it last year during 1st rifle successfully on a big chunk of private ground in a moderately difficult draw unit, so YMMV depending. Got a bull fired up and left him to simmer over night, went back in the morning and he was right there still pissed off.
I've had some sweet bugling in October. Called in a bull on October 9th. Many buddies have had bugling opportunities in mid October. I think it tapers pretty hard after October 12thish. They definitely bugle some here and there but not enough to base your strategy on, you know. They set the rifle seasons intentionally in many states to avoid much bugling action.
Bugling seems to really fall off by that time as idahohikker stated, but you still hear it from time to time, especially if you are close. I've had very limited responses from bulls that late. Usually they seem to go the opposite direction. They aren't interested in challenges from other bulls and are leery from archery season.
Some of my best bugling has been in October if you hit it right and a cow or two comes into estrus the bugling can be intense just a shorter window of opportunity on my I have killed a pot load of bulls around the 10th and then around the 25th in otc hunts in Idaho...on my special Washington tag last year I again had great bugling around the 25th....
I don’t do much bugling but have heard plenty. I think that the bulls who are herded up at that point aren’t usually the big boys who bred most of the cows. Those guys have peeled off to safer pastures and left the 3rd and 4th cycle cows to the satellites. Generally.
We’ve hunted Southern Co 1st rifle for a couple years. Year before last we didn’t hear any bugles but some hunters we ran into had heard a ton. Last year they were bugling all week.
