With Montana not allowing doe hunting for the next two seasons I'm looking for meat alternatives.

That being said let's make this clear. I do not believe shooting a livestock animal behind a fence is hunting by any means!!!

HOWEVER between buying a beef that someone else slaughtered or going to a buffalo ranch I'm taking buffalo.

I consider myself a hunting fanatic. But waterfowl is my game.

Now that I got the disclaimer out of the way for the ethics police....

Has anyone ever shot a "rachalo"?
My buddy arrowed one last year for the same reasons I stated. No luck hunting and a family to feed.

But I'm not sure my 60# longbow would quite do the trick... Maybe with a heavy arrow???

What about rifles? The biggest thing I have is a 308. My bro in law used a 30/06 with a head shot, someone owed him money and took a rachalo for payment.

I probably could barrow a 45-70 from a brother in law...

Man I'm gunna miss doe hunting! So much fun being able to go out and full a couple tags in a day. Oh well!

i'm with your bro in law on this one. just drive out to them, shoot it in the head, work it up, and you have your beef for the year.

Totally! I'd go chase elk but man its tough spending the money in hopes for meat. It was cool when I new I could have a chance at filling doe tags...

I've thought about it..... Freezer is looking pretty good right now but a bunch of bison would be pretty sweet!

Besides it will be years before I draw a tag if ever!

I hunted meat bulls twice with Lee Hawes Kansas. Awesome experience and a freezer full of meat each time.
The first trip my brother used his .308 with Hornady Superformance 165's. One shot, full pass-through at about 100 yards. My wife killed her meat buff with a .308, same results.

Unfortunately, Lee sold off his buffalo when the grass died on his range and he could not support the herd without feeding. He didn't want to be hunting and shooting big, furry cattle.

That said, there are several big, free-range ranches in the Sand Hills of Nebraska offering meat hunts this year.

Good luck in your quest!
