Look at a tc venture. Bought 2 for my nephews last year, I believe for around 350 and both shoot sub-moa with any ammo we tried and around 5/8" with the hornady cheap stuff.

Ruger American would be my choice. I dont personally own one but my dad has 2 one of which he has used as his primary hunting rifle. Good quality on a budget and good aftermarket support as well.

Check out Eurooptics sale on Muaser M18. I bought one as a beat around hunting rifle and it is very nice, and lives up the the 5 shot sub-MOA guarantee

I have a Ruger American I leave with a buddy in CO so I don’t have to deal with being perp walked by TSA at the airport. Excellent accuracy for hunting purposes. Reasonably light weight but not uncontrollably so. Not a huge fan of the magazine, but it is convenient for complying with CO ATV laws. A good shot of WD seems to make mine work better. The short bolt throw is nice, the inside of the receiver has a lot of tool marks and it’s very similar to the feeling of a zipper when working the bolt. But it works fine. The trigger is good to go for hunting, I don’t mind the extra blade.

“cheap as possible without buying junk”

Is that possible? I would say go used, if not borrow a rifle for the hunt! Cheapest option by far and probably get a better rifle.

The best advice I can give is what I decided 5 years ago- Don’t buy cheap guns!

I don’t own a Remington 783 but I sighted one in for a buddy. Chambered in 30-06 and the thing was a damn shooter. The overall quality of it I wasn’t impressed with. Like the material of the stock. However there was nothing performance wise that I could actually complain about for a budget gun.

Yep, I just decided this in the past year. Sold my cheap ones to but a nice good one. Will not buy another cheap one again.

The Marlin X7 rifles were the same way. Accurate and functional but the finishes are visibly cheap. Rough seams and excess flex in the stock, trigger guard prone to cracking, and a junky extractor. All easy fixes for anyone willing to put a little time into it and replace a couple parts. I still use one in 243 as a loaner for when someone inevitably has an issue with their rifle or there's a guest who needs to borrow one. For the $300 or so into it, I don't need to worry about what happens to it and if the shooter misses I know it wasn't the rifle at fault.

Hi everyone looking for a budget rifle for a family member thats coming in a Texas hog hunt with me. Looking at Ruger Americans, Savage axis, Remington 783, Mossberg patriot.

If anyone has any input on these rifles I would appreciate some guidance. We're looking to get into something for as cheap as possible without buying junk, other than this hog hunt it's possible he may come along on a antalope or deer hunt someday.

If youre looking at a rifle that isnt going to be used alot, ive really enjoyed my savage axis in 22-250 for coyote hunting. shoots great and isnt to heavy. But if its going to see alot of use id shoot for something a little nicer. Im about to get my hands on a bergara b14 hunter as a new backpacking gun.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger American. I keep one around for PA deer season of the weather is going to be bad or someone needs something to borrow. I threw a VX1 on it in a dnz mount and it shoots everything I put through it under moa. Fairly light rifle as well.
