What’s a decent EBike for the under $1k? I’m not climbing mountains with it, I’ll just be on service roads and well used trails. Some steep hills, but no mountains here. Just want something to get me a mile or two into some hunting spots faster than walking.

I don't know the answer to your question but I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy one. The ebike space is saturated. Yamaha just pulled out of the US market because of it. I suspect we will see ebike companies fall in the near future and some sell bikes at big discounts.

There's a bunch in the Pawn shops around here. Might be a place to keep tabs on.

Yeah, lots here too. If you look around
you can probably find the same one you parked without 47 locks and a guard dog.

$1000 is a dangerous space. You get what you pay for on the low end China bikes. The shops here are refusing to work on anything they did not sell. Charging fires, low end components, etc are an issue. The TX ranch we hog hunt on had a new Aventon mail order bike when we were there is 2023. Came back 12 months later and it was in the junk pile. Rusted, battery shot, shifters not working etc.

I have a Specialized VADO urban fitness bike and a Harley Davidson Serial 1, 3 inch tire hunting bike. Both are fabulous. Love them and my dealer stands behind them. Both were $3K each.
Might have to adjust your thinking on this one IMO.
There are many analogies but going on a 2 week backcountry elk hunt with a $39 Walmart pack is one of them.

Build your own if you have a mtn bike. I had a Kona Big Kahuna put 1000 watt motor on it and a 52 volt battery. Its a beast. Cost me about $700

What a good base bike to build off of? My neighbor put a Bafang on his cheap mountain bike that has no front suspension...motor works great, but if you hit a bump, you're crashing.

Most of what I'll be riding on is service roads, I'm just out of shape and can't pedal up bigger hills, so something with pedal assist would be great. Not tackling touch terrain. Don't really want to spend $3k on something for that use case.

Find a used bike on marketplace. If you desire suspension, I’d probably not opt for rear suspension if you want to put a rack on the rear.
